Just bought a new computer with Windows Vista.

Keeps crashing sporadically and I get the Blue screen of death error. It doesnt seem to happen after using any particular program either. I have gone 3 days with it not happening and then all of a sudden it happens three times in a couple of hours.

This is an example of the error message I get:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
    Locale ID: 1033

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: 50
    BCP1: F6C800E4
    BCP2: 00000001
    BCP3: 82159DC9
    BCP4: 00000002
    OS Version: 6_0_6000
    Service Pack: 0_0
    Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
    C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini071007-01.dmp
    C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-73039-0.sysdata.xml
    C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Temp\WER9B54.tmp.version.txt

One of my friends thinks they installed Vista over XP and its conflicting. He thinks I should reformat the hard drive. I would rather not do that if I dont have to.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

On a new 'off the shelf' computer highly unlikely. The OS and supplied programs are loaded from a disk image to a clean hard drive.

Download our Dump Data Collection Tool - I think it runs on Vista and post a debug log here - we will analyse it the best we can .....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33471

This is the file to analyse - C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini071007-01.dmp or a later one if available - that is 10th July

A code 50 error can be caused by defective memory - RAM, CPU L2 cache or video memory.

Check out the RAM using Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool or memtest, although I have a feeling I saw memory diagnostics on the F8 (Boot to Safe Mode) screen in Vista, although that may have been in one of the betas. (Still running XP)
