I'm running Windows XP with Intel P4 HT with 512 Ram and my computer would occasionally reboot and then it became more frequently.
Here the trouble shooting steps I already tried. Under start & recovery I removed the check to restart automatically then check the log the next rime it rebooted but it was blank. I replace CPU fan and memory still rebooting. I changed msconfig not to start any services and computer did not reboot. So I decide it was a software problem and formatted the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP kept reboot booting during the install and now reboot more often then before. Tried different keyboard and mouse still no luck.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Two areas you should look at ....

    Your PSU may be failing

Your hard drive may have problems - check that out using the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - preferably the DOS version (boot from CD) .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

Are you sure that the memory you installed is compatible with your system and that it is seated correctly? Check out which memory is compatible by running through the memory selector at Crucial.com.

Other hardware problems are possible such as a failing motherboard.

I did check and the memory is compatible. The hard drive is Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Sata drive and I look on the Seagate web page did not see the dignostic software will look again. I don't have a spare power supply at the moment but will try that.

This happened to me before. I fixed it by changing my HDD power plugin to a new one. Usually your power supply will have a few extra plugs tied up out of the way. I never had another blue screen after that.

    Something to try maybe?

Try moving the memory modules around - guessing you may only have a single module so try it in another slot.

Follow these instructions to post a Dump Data Log.

If you do not have a dump, ensure that your machine is configured to write out a dump by following the directions from microsoft

In case you can't get the drivers installed, at startup go the Startup Options (F8) where you can select Safe Mode, but try selecting Enable VGA Mode.

Are you using the onboard graphics or a PCIe graphics card?

    To summarise ...

Replaced CPU fan & memory - no change

Formatted and reinstall XP - no change

Check hard drive - passed OK

    Rplaced PSU - no change

Moving memory module from one slot to another gave an error

Your suggestion that the motherboard is a fault may well be correct, especially in the light of the bolded entry above.

You've checked or replaced just about everything except the motherboard and CPU which leaves nothing else. As the graphics are integrated into the motherboard this tends to strengthen the argument.

May be someone else will have further suggestions .....

You can try going into the BIOS at startup. Find (or look up in the manual) the setting for the SATA controller. If it is set to ACHI, change that, Save and Exit. You should be able to change it back after installing the chipset drivers. You might need to re-run the Windows installation again (or do a repair reinstall).

Since you've done so many things and it's still not working, I'd suggest getting a really cheap video card (I've seen PCI and AGP cards for as low as $10). In the BIOS, disable the onboard graphics and install the new card.

    resolved

I tried reinstalling Windows XP again and got the error message "Setup cannot set the required Windows XP configuration information. This indicates an internal setup error." I then went to microsoft web page and it said it was incompatible hardware. Then I went to intel support page which told me to change a jumper on the motherboard to configure and reboot then it brought up a new screen and I changed the setting to "Plug and Play OS from no to yes" shutdown move the jumper back reboot and finished install Windows XP so far computer is running fine.
