My computer appears to be slow in booting up, slow when icons are clicked and slow in shutting down. This is not happening all the time, I hasten to add.

This is a new phenomenon and has only recently manifested itself.

Yes I believe that I have done nearly ALL the recommended jobs, Defrag, Avast Antivirus, Spybot, Ashampoo WinOptomiser, Ashampoo Antivirus, etc, etc., you name then I believe I have done it. I might have missed one or two out but have done very thing to try to speed this up

I have Mozilla Firefox which I use as my default web page and which is also at times slow to load. Could it be any new programe I have loaded??

Any ideas out there which ARE NOT too complicated.

    Thank you

Could be many things - from a program/OS update to some kind of malware. very difficult to pin point.

    Here is a general checklist:
    1. Run chkdsk /f on hard disk
    2. Look for clues in Event Manager - some program not responding or stuff like it.
    3. Have a look at your startup programs & services.

Regarding Firefox, its a known problem & is reported to have been corrected in FF 3.1. Try the solutions at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6136_102-0.html?forumID=38&threadID=242416&messageID=2455726 & http://www.greenmtngeek.com/2008/06...-use-try-this-fix/comment-page-5/#comment-186. In my case, these made a lot of difference & actually made FF usable.

Hi Jacobowicz. In addition to what rsinfo suggessted please follow my instructions below to increase your systems performance.

    Please do the following:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you dont use
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger and click ok when you are done.
    3. Click Start< Run and type services.msc and press ok. The Services window will open. Highlight the following services, click properties and under startup type click disabled and hit ok. Do this ONLY for each service that I list below:
    Distributed Link Tracking Client
    Distributed Transaction Coordinator
Health Key and Certificate Management Service
    Indexing Service
    Net Logon
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
    Remote Registry
    Smart Card
    Telnet
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
    WMI Performance Adapter

    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files.
    6. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    7. Have you installed Windows XP Service Pack 3? If not then download it from here, http://softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html.

Let me know if those suggesstions helped. :)

    Slow computing

Thanks to both of you for your detailed suggestions which I have taken on board and appreciate.

I did the disc error check on both drives, which I had originally forgotten to do, and I have noticed there has been some slight improvement.

Being computer literate, but not as experienced as you Evans Omo, I am very reluctant to make other changes and dive into the realms of the unknown as far as I am concerned.

I have an old adage "if it ain't broke then don't fix it ".

Thank you both so very much for the time and trouble to try to make an old man happy.

    Have a nice day!!

    ;)
