It's not an issue for me, but I am curious. Since the last Windows Update, my computer goes into hibernation whenever I leave it for a while. Was there something in the updates that made this change? All I have to do is press any key and it is back to life at the log in page.

Hi Barry. Windows Updates shouldn't have changed your power settings. To check your power settings, click Start< Control Panel< System and Security< Power Options< Change power plan settings< Change advanced power settings, expand the Sleep category and verify that the options are set to your satisfaction. Then click on Ok to save the changes.

If this is a desktop computer then I would set the power plan to high performance as well.

Thank you for the information. I notice my computer stopped hibernating on its own, before I adjusted anything. I guess it was just a fluke, but at least now I know where to go if I want to make adjustments.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, are you sure it is "hibernation" the computer is going into, and not that it is just going to sleep?

See: Difference between Sleep, Hybrid Sleep & Hibernation in Windows 7 | 8

If you have a PC running with W7 or W8, then Hybrid is the way to go for the best compromise between total power off - requiring a full boot upon user return and never powering off. Hybrid uses the ATX Form Factor standard required +5Vsb "standby power" to maintain "holding" power on your RAM when the computer is "asleep ", thus keeping the memory it holds "alive" for "near instant" return when you wake the computer.

Hybrid causes your computer to consume a "little bit" more power when "sleeping" but allows your computer to wake up and be right where you left it much quicker than from hibernation or from a full boot.

My desktop probably went into hybrid sleep. The fans were off, but hitting a key on the keyboard brought me back to the sign in page.

And when you signed in, you should go to where you were before - including any open documents, programs and webpages.
