My desktop pc started hanging and it got so bad I decided to reload windows from scratch. Whilst formatting the disk it found a couple of bad tracks so as the disk was a bit small I bought a new hard disk. Loaded windows xp pro and all ok untill I loaded my wireless network card software and I got the hangs again, usualy a few minutes when using the internet, no other software has been loaded. I have found if I deinstall the network card I do not get any hangs. So thinking it was a duff network card I bought another one (different manufacture) but the same thing happens when I load its software and start using the internet it just freezes. I have tried the network card in a different PCI slot but no change. There are no other cards in the PCI slots. Any help appreciated.
    Regards Paul

Have you loaded the chipset drivers for the motherboard?

Checked in BIOS that any onboard LAN is disabled?

    Checked for updated drivers?

Should not cause any problems IMHO.

I just have to deinstall the drivers for the network card to stop the hangs.
My Motherboard does not have an onboard Lan.
I,m not sure what you mean by chipset drivers for the motherboard

The chipset drivers drive the North Bridge and South Bridge chips and provided dedicated drivers for things like the IDE/SATA controllers.

Post the make and model of your mobo and I will point you to them. If you don't kmow this detail download and run SIW and go Hardware > Motherboard in the left hand pane.

No guarantee that this will solve the problem, but these drivers must be loaded after a format.

    As I posted previously.....
    Some further thought, etc ....

Presumably the computer connects wirelessly to a router? Are there any other computers connected to the router and, if so, do you experience the same problem on them?

Have you tried rebooting the router?

If the wireless card has a LAN port can you try connecting the computer directly via a CAT cable?

It's possible that there is a problem with the motherboard - this aspect could be eliminated, at least in part, by connecting another computer wirelessly to the router.

There are two laptops in our house both connect wireless to the router without any problems.
The wireless network card does not have a Lan port nor does the motherboard

The only conclusion I can reach is that there is a problem with the motherboard as the format and re-install has not resolved the problem.

The only remaining suggestion I have - which may or may not be practical/successful is to install a network card and connect to the router directly via a CAT cable.

Although it falls outside the boundary of a fix for your wireless PCI card, you could try a wireless USB device.

    ;)

    1. You do not mention which version of XP (service pack version). You should install service pack 3.

    2. Install ONLY the drivers for the wlan card, do NOT install the manufacturer wlan connection software.

    3. Let windows manage the wlan connection.
