Weirdest behavior...computer hangs for up to a minute when opening Outlook, an Access database, Word, Windows Explorer.

I have run several registry cleaners, have good spyware detection, AntiVirus, Firewall installed.

Computer is a no-name AMD Athlon 2800 with 512 Ram, 80 gig 7200 WesternDigital HD.

Behavior began several weeks ago but I can't tie it to any specific event like new software install...it just started happening. In addition, once open, Outlook hangs for 10-15 seconds every five minutes or so. A little patience and all settles down eventually.

I'm lost here...I have also inserted the Office disk and run the built-in repair.

    Ideas?

    Hi binetp and welcome.

Sounds like you've done most of the things that should usually help out with this sort of issue.

Several other suggestions for things that very well could fix the problem and certainly won't hurt.
    - run an online virus scan just in case you have a critter that silently disabled your onboard AV. Several listed in quicklinks in my signature.
    - in My Computer, right-click on your system partition/disk, click properties, and click the cleanup button. Let the system clean all suggested items. Also good to dump all temp internet files and internet history.
    - click on start, on run, key in sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc) and OK. You'll need your XP CD.
    - click on start, on run, key in cmd and OK. With the cmd window open, chkdsk /f and ENTER. Answer Yes when it asks about doing the scan at next boot and reboot.

    Thanks...

Did all you suggested...still hangs but i have a warm fuzzy feeling inside for having gotten rid of so much junk. Am now going through your quicklinks to search further.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Sounds like the Outlook settings are set to send and receive on startup. look in the tools / option in outlook. check the mail setup settings. it sound like you are down loading the mail to your hard drive or does it stay on the mail server. internet mail will do the same thing if on a slow connection.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administartive tools
Open Event Viewer, then look through the Application and System logs, and see if there are any Outlook errors or warnings in there
