[Resolved] Computer extremely slow; constant error messages

    Hi.

I'm brand-new, and would like to follow all rules. (I've read them carefully.) I have searched a couple of different times in this forum, but I don't see anyone else who had this precise problem. I am quite certain my computer is very badly infected with malware/spyware.

My normally very fast computer is down to a crawl. (Extremely slow.) Warning messages are constantly coming in, they appear in the lower right side of the screen as pop-ups. They keep saying things like "access has been blocked to [such and such] website." And there are many, many websites, one after another in subsequent warning messages.

Below I am including as directed the 2 logs, DDS.txt and Attach.txt. What I have tried: I ran all the following a number of times - Malwarebyte, AVG, Spybot, and Ad-aware. All to no avail. Just a few cookies were found, and the Programs cleaned them up. I have no idea of where to turn to. Could somebody please advise? Thanks!

    Larry

    Here are my 2 logs:

    DDS.txt:

How much RAM do you have?

    Print these instructions out.

NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to scanner.exe

***VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure, you update Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes before running the scans.***

STEP 1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
    http://www.superantispyware.com/

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes ". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates ". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html.)
    * Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

    PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

    Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

    * Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
    * Click Scan your Computer... button.
    * Click Scanning Preferences/Control Center... button.
    * Under General and Startup tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    * Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next.
    * A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes.
    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
    * Click Close to exit the program.
    Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.

    RECONNECT TO THE INTERNET

    RESTART COMPUTER!

STEP 2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to your desktop.
(Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

    ******************************************************************************************
Due to a bug in Malwarebytes, you may see in MBAM's log following entries:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\atapi (Rootkit)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\atapi (Rootkit)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi (Rootkit)

    DO NOT remove those entries!
If you do, your computer will become UN-bootable.
The issue has been fixed in the latest MBAM update, so, it's EXTREMELY important, you update MBAM before you run it.
    ****************************************************************************************

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    * Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.
Post the log to your next reply.

    RESTART COMPUTER

You didn't use my link to download HJT. Your version is outdated.
    Please, re-do.
Also, disable "word wrap" in Notepad, because the log is hard to read.

    OK, here's the correction.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the corrections. Used your link this time, and word wrap is disabled:

(BTW, I disabled word wrap in my word pad, and it looks much better on my computer. For some reason, it looks all weird here still...I'm at a loss.)

    Thanks,

    Larry Blau

It doesn't look like we're dealing with an infection here, but let's try one more scan...

Please download ComboFix from [color= "Red"]Here[/color] to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

In your case, Spybot's Tea Timer. Instruction for it and Ad-aware are at my link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html (reply #3)
As for Malwarebytes, it's only important, if you have paid version, which runs in real time.
You should have an icon in your systray, where you can stop it.
If you have free version, you're fine. It doesn't run in real time.

    Thanks. How about script blocking?

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for all that. Also, may I ask what do I do to disable script blocking? Plus, I'm guessing I have to do all that NOT in safe mode, but in normal mode, right?

    Thanks,

    Larry

    Disabling TeaTimer will do.

Yes, run Combofix in normal mode.

    Success!

    ------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------------------

So, I have the logs done, both Combofix.txt and Hijackthis.txt. First I'd like to ask a couple of quick questions:

    1. Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Thanks for that. I've followed your directions pretty much to the letter. Everything went fine, except one little thing. In your directions on disabling TeaTimer under Spybot, something strange: Your directions say in Advanced mode, to click on Tools and "Resident Icon." So far, so good. Then uncheck
"Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
Again, everything was fine. However, the next part was strange: According to directions - Click on the System Startup icon on the list, which I did, but I looked a bunch of times and could not find a box in that section saying TeaTimer, so I could not uncheck that second one. Does that make a difference?

    2. I was in such a hurry to uncheck all the boxes I could find under "Shields," in Spysweeper that I do not remember if two of them were originally checked or not. One was "email attachments," the other was "startup items." Any thoughts on the importance of (re-?)checking these two, since I can't remember how they were set originally?

    3. Finally, your directions say I have to use your link to download
"ResetTeaTimer.zip." (That's of course included in the directions to disable TeaTimer.) Do I still need to do that, since I forgot? Did I mess up the logs as a result? And can I get away without running it at all, at this point?

Thanks so much again for your trouble. Here're the logs.

    Larry

    You did just fine :)

Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com/ for security check:
(all files located in c:\windows\system32\drivers folder):
    09497561.sys
    0949756.sys
    09497562.sys
    8418781.sys
    84187812.sys
    41290431.sys
    4129043.sys
    41290432.sys
    82036391.sys
    8203639.sys
    82036392.sys
Post scan result for ANY file, which wasn't declared clean. Don't post results for clean files.

Have you ever had Kaspersky installed on your computer?

    Awesome

    =====================================

First, I wanted to say, "A Million Thanks! "

Well, all the logs came up with the same: "No results." And things like "0/41." I guess that means all the anti-virals, each in turn, is finding no errors.

Yes to Kaspersky, I had it briely. I have screen shots if you need them.
(Problematic, because they are shown as .gif - So I wouldn't know how to deliver them to you.)

    Best,
    Larry

    1. Please open Notepad
    • Click Start , then Run
    • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

    2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

    Code:
    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\82036392.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\8203639.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\82036391.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\41290432.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\4129043.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\41290431.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\84187812.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\8418781.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\09497562.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\0949756.sys
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\09497561.sys

    Folder::

    Driver::
    84187811
    82036391
    41290431
    09497561
    84187812
    82036392
    41290432
    09497562

    Registry::

    RegLockDel::

    3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

    4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

    5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
    • Combofix.txt
    • A new HijackThis log.

OK. Below are the new logs. There "may be" a few potential problems:

    1. I am not sure if I ran the right version of HJT, or used my old outdated version.

    2. Unfortunately, when it came down to the directions, I couldnt stop the process Spy Sweeper Engine process. It is grayed-out. Also, it is showing “started” mode.

    3. I of course disabled all anti virus, spysweeper, malwarebytes, etc., again. Then I ran both Combofix and Hijack this in Normal, not Safe, mode…

    4. While I did attempt to run Combofix in Normal (not Safe) mode, there was a hitch. It didn't run well at all when I was connected to the Internet. So I had to disconnect it from the Internet, because it seemed to not be doing anything for a long while. After that (when I physically disconnected my computer from the Internet), the system didn't want to do anything at all. (Nothing would start.)

So, I finally had to run Combofix with my computer disconnected from the Internet (but in Normal mode of course). I ran HJT also in Normal mode, but not connected to the Internet.

    Thanks again.
    Larry

I don't know, what happened, but it looks like Combofix did its job on your first run :)

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start> "Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall "
    Restart computer.

    =================================================================

Disable TeaTimer, as it'll interfere with the cleaning process:
Right click Spybot's TeaTimer System Tray Icon.
    Click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident.
    TeaTimer closes.
NOTE. If on re-boot, Spybot inquires about registry change(s), allow it.

    ================================================================

Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

    1. Open HijackThis.

    2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

    3. Put checkmarks next to the following HijackThis entries:

    nothing malicious to remove

    4. You should also checkmark following entries (these are unnecessary startups; no actual programs will be removed):

    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\CLIStart.exe "
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe "
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe "
    - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware] "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe" /starttray [unless you have paid version]
    - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

    5. Click on Fix checked button.

    6. Go Start>Run (Vista users - "Start search "), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (Vista users - hold CTRL, and SHIFT keys, press Enter).

    Command Prompt window will open.
    Type in:
    sc stop "Symantec RemoteAssist "
    Press Enter.
Wait for the service to be stopped.

    Type in:
    sc delete "Symantec RemoteAssist "
    Press Enter.
    Wait for confirmation.

    7. Restart computer.

    8. Post new HijackThis log.

    One Question

    ===================================

    A Quick Question:

    I don't understand Question #1)

"Open HijackThis ". Does that mean I ought to rerun HijackThis.exe, scan only, but not creating a log this time? Otherwise, I don't understand the request to Open HijacThis.

    Thanks,
    Larry

Yes, re-run HJT (scan + log), apply fixes and post fresh HJT log.
