Computer says "Please insert disk . . ." when there is a disk in there. I uninstalled the drive and rebooted, but no change. I can install a program from that drive, so I guess it's not a total goner.

What could be the problem here?

Does it say it for a blank disk, a burnt disk or a commercial disk? It sounds like it will read a commercial disk like a program, video or audio. If it is a blank or burnt disk, have you tried it in a different CD/DVD drive? Some older drives won't work with the latest types/brands of burnable disk, they may need a firmware update to read/burn them.

Are you trying to read a DVD when the drive is only a CD drive? Similarly, are you trying to read a Blue-Ray disk when it is only a standard DVD drive?

Thank you, mattman, for trying to help me. I remembered last night that I had installed a couple of Windows updates and wondered if that could be the problem, backed those out, and voila! the burner worked. I'll never understand these things.
