I just changed my computer from Linux to Windows. I have gotten just about everything i need up and running, but am having serious issues with getting my speakers working. I installed the Realtek AC'97 driver and got the speaker icon in the bottom left corner, but the speakers (5.1 surround) still wont work. I checked them with a different computer and they are wired correctly, so i am not sure what else to do.

I filled out the system specs information in my profile if that helps.

    Computer Management>Other Devices:
    Ethernet Controller
    Other PCI Bridge Device
    PCI Memory Controller
    RAID Controller
    SM Bus Controller

All advice is greatly appreciated, so thanks in advance :)

I have the ASUS Driver disc...

I have the ASUS NVIDIA NFORCE4 Chipset Support CD and installed all of the Drivers, but the speakers still won't show any signs of life. They work perfectly when plugged into another computer, but for whatever reason wont even produce system sounds on my current desktop. I'm not sure if i have overlooked something, but getting these speakers working has become my personal enterprise and is causing me all sorts of headache.

    Thanks for all advice,
    Jason

I had the same mobo many moons ago ....

Have you checked that the AC97 Audio is enabled in the BIOS? -Advanced tab?

Does that include the x64 drivers?

    As I posted earlier .....
    ???

Have you installed the drivers from a CD or a single executable file? If it is an executable file please post the file name.

I installed "Realtek ALC850 Driver V5.10.0.5870 for Windows 2000/XP(WHQL)/2003 and Windows 64bit XP(WHQL)/2003" and still nothing. After checking the bios if found that AC'97 Audio was listed as [enabled].

I have completely exhausted every solution that i can think of, so the future of my computer audio seems to rest in the hands of this forum

    Thanks for your time,
    Jason

Try to uninstall the audio drivers and reinstall them.

Do you have the Realtek Sound Manager AV Rack installed.
If so, when the computer is on, your speakers turned on and you plug the speaker-lead in to the appropriate socket you should get the Speaker selection diagram up on your screen pointing out to you if have a working connection.
My personal guess though is a very common issue, has your motherboard a set of Jumpers like Front Panel Jumper check in your User Manual and you might find that there might have to be a specific jumper setting for your back panel out.
Normally in the diagram of the Jumper the position of the Jumper would be greyed out.

I have just had a look at your motherboard manual and yes you do have Jack - Sensing function.
Your Audio configuration is on pages 5-12
and you do have Pins that need the correct Jumper setting for default or front panel audio out, default is normally rear panel.
If you do not have a manual you can download it from here.
