Hi, I'm on my brothers computer and he is claiming that his computer is running very slowly. Its a Windows XP S2 and I've done McAfee scans and nothing came up. - note, I've tried to get him to uninstall limewire... he won't.

Nothing malware related jumping out at me there other than PowerReg. It's a registration reminder, and often detected by antispyware applications.

Your brother has been well advised in regards to Limewire. Best to remove it, and utorrent too.

I see two resource hogs running though. AOL and McAfee. I'm quite sure performance would be better if an alternative was used.

You could disable all of the startup entries listed below as well. It may speed up boot time a bit, and lighten the load a little once Windows is loaded. None are essential and can be started manually, some will start when you use the associated program.

It may help to clean out temps and prefetch too.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Have there been problems with programs freezing or crashing with an error?

There was a crash a few months ago, I believe, and I scanned the computer with McAfee, Spybot, and Ad-Adware and it came up clean. I then used ATF and cleaned the computer up and there hasn't been a problem.

Should I also fix that with HJT?

And how would I disable all the entries? Would I have to go into each program seperately or is there a way just to disable them all in one shot?

Yes, fix those 2 entries with HijackThis. You could use HijackThis to fix them all, which would stop them from loading at startup. If you wanted or needed to put one back, HijackThis makes backups which can be selectively restored. I do recommend putting HijackThis in a folder by itself first, then running it from there (in case the downloads folder it's in has other stuff). If you need to know how to restore from backup, let me know and I'll give you instructions.

Another alternative is to use a third party app like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. It's GUI makes it very easy to toggle startups off/on.

Quicktime and real player updater can be disabled from startup through their preferences, and will often add themselves back into the stratup routine after one use, unless done through the preferences. I don't remember specifically where to tell you to look though ..... sorry. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll dig it up.

Often times realsched.exe even has to be renamed to realsched.old to keep it from loading.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

rename to

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.old
