[Active] Computer acting strange after installing a different HD

    Hello All,

This is my first time posting in here And I need a bit of help. I added all my system specs that I know to my profile thing when I signed up so I hope that helps. I Dont have alot of skill in troubleshooting if I have a problem so I need more advanced help.
About 2 months ago I replaced my 40 gig HD ( I dont need alot of space) with another 40 gig because it was going out on me. I had someone help me do this because I dont know enough to do it ojn my own. After installing it my computer seems to run alot slower than it did before as if something was slowing it down or preventing it from running like it should. I use Firefox and IE and I have problems with web pages loading sometimes or taking forever to load. its almost like something blocks the connection. I have DSL and when the pages wont load up I have to physically unplug the phone line from the DSL modem..let the dsl and internet lights go out then plug the phone line back in again. That usually fixes the problem..but I know that isnt normal and have no idea whats causing it. Ive Scanned with AVG8 and spybot thinking maybe I caught something but nothing turns up at all. Ive even run them in safe mode because I heard it was better..still nothing. Something is seriously slowing my system down and something is causing the problem with my connection as well. My computer also reboots slower than it did before too. After the intial loadup its a black screen then after 2-4 minutes it goes to the windows screen. I have all the important updates except SP3 and I dont want it. So I need to figure out why its acting like it is. Its not the newest computer but I know it can do alot better than it is. It did before I changed HD's. I will post an RSIT log as well.If there is anything else I need to do please let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated..Thanks

    Welcome to WindowsBBS Vasago30 :)

Your logs look fine. Has the slowed behavior been present right from the start after installing the new drive? Do you have the specifications for the drive?

I have one more question .... why do you not want SP3?

    Hello Noah,
Thanks for answering. It has been running slow since I changed the HD..I dont know the HD specs..just the model # of it. Its the same HD as my other one but about 3 months older. I dont really want service pack 3 because ive heard others who have had problems with it and I dont want to be one of those people. SP2 seems to do fine for me..No point fixing whats not broke unless I have to.

Sounds as though the problem might just be the new drive. What is the model?

People can and do have problems with any number of updates. SP3 is an important update and there's plenty of support available for anyone that does have a problem with it. I've also seen a number of people actually report an increase in performance after installing it .... my own machine included.

Here is the model # WDC WD400BB-75DEA0 (not sure if that last one is a O or a zero) Ill look into SP3 and see what its all about. BTW..all my system specs i know are in the drop down menu if you need to see anything else. Also..I dont know about BIOS but Ive had other people tell me that the BIOS not being right could cause probs as well..but I dont know if mine are wrong or not..I know they were reset when I installed this HD though. Those are a bit more advanced than im used to doing and I honestly dont want to really mess up my system.

I would not suspect performance issues due to BIOS settings. Are you sure they were reset? It should not have been necessary to touch the BIOS.

Recommend you run the full test at PCPitstop
You will be prompted to install an activeX control, which you must allow to run the test.
    Create a free account.
Recommend you exit all other programs prior to starting the test.
Do not touch anything while the tests are running.
When the test is done, email me a link to the results and I will take a look at them.

NOTE - don't take any action on any of the test results - not every recommendation is beneficial.

Try to temporarily disable AVG during the tests. AVs can sometimes interfere.

Open the Device Manager and make sure there are no errors shwon (will be marked with yellow caution symbol).

Go to the computer manufacturer's website and check for updated video drivers.

In your browser, click Tools>Internet Options
Click Settings in the Browsing History section, then View Objects
Locate the PCPistop3d.dll or anything else related to PCPitStop and right click>Remove
OK out of both dialogs and try running the test again
You shouls be prompted to Install the ActiveX component again

Did you "move" your old Windows system to the new drive by cloning it or did you install Windows fresh?

You can go to Start -> Run and type dxdiag [press Enter].
You will find some information and tests for the graphics.

HDDs don't usually slowly stop working unless you started hearing noises from it.

Get those other drivers that you see on Dave's link. The mini IDE driver might improve the HDD performance. The LAN might help with the internet connection. Check in Device Manager that there are no problems listed. If you install Windows "fresh ", run the drivers CD that came with the system/motherboard before you install any other programs. After the system is working "nicely" check at the hardware manufacturer's website for driver updates.

Slowness at startup can be caused by an incorrect driver being loaded (LAN can be one of the biggest culprits). From memory, I think I have had problems with a SiS system before I installed the (mini) IDE drivers.

The 3D test at PCPitstop might be failing because of the slowness in your internet connection.

Hmmm...from your link I see "Testing drives..." gets a chequered flag.

If it still seems to be a graphics adapter driver problem, boot into Safe Mode, go to Add or Remove Programs, uninstall the SiS graphics drivers/software. When you reboot into normal mode, if you are asked for drivers, click Cancel, then when you get to the desktop, run the new graphics driver installer again.

    Matt

    Noah,
I did exactly as you said and then reinstalled the active x component then retried the test..I still get the message :(

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for the reponse. When I replaced the HD it was a clean install..I didnt even want to change but kept getting the S.M.A.R.T. disk, bad sector, HD failing message everytime i rebooted and it was making some noise..The HD was prob 5 yrs old already. I did install the VGA driver he listed and also the Lan driver. I'll see if anything changes in the next couple days. I really want to avoid doing another clean install if it can be helped..Its such a pain to keep moving everything i want to save to my external drive everytime. Im not the most advanced Comp person to actually do all this diff stuff either..I only know what ive done myself when I had too.
