I have a folder that contains Javascripts, among other things. When I copy that folder to a compressed folder (empty) something odd happens. All the Javascript extensions are changed from 'js' to 'j_'. Only those extensions seem effected. Can someone explain why this happens and how to fix it? TIA.

What happens if try to compress the folder directly rather than copy to an existing archive?

What happens when you uncompress the files?

When I compress the files directly the extensions stay as 'js'. But that doesn't answer the question as to why that happens.

When the files are uncompressed the extensions stay as 'j_'.

I suspect the problem has to do with the text encoding of the js files. Unicode, UTF8, etc. Could be the js files are an unrecognized encoding.

What happen when drag non-txt or rich txt files such as images, audio or docx to an existing archive?
