    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Basically you do nothing :) Compress Old Files is pretty meaningless - the degree of compression is minimal and access speed may be impaired.

Hi PinoyPits. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Adding to what Pete said, normally whenever I run disk cleanup I uncheck the compress old files checkbox. Compressing old files can sometimes cause more harm than good and there are better ways to save disk space. If you really want to get rid of junk files and save harddrive space you can download and run ATF Cleaner.

I remove the "Compress Old Files" option from the Cleanup applet on any all my family and friends computers. It can sometimes cause a hangup problem if you have some corrupt files that can't be compressed.

It's easily removed and restored by simple .reg files.

To remove the option, copy/paste the following code to a Notepad session and save it as CompressNo.reg:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files]
To restore the option, copy/paste the following code to a Notepad session and save it as CompressYes.reg:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files]
    @= "{B50F5260-0C21-11D2-AB56-00A0C9082678} "
     "Priority "=dword:0000012c
     "StateFlags "=dword:00000000
Double click either of the saved files and affirm the action to allow the Registry setting to be changed to either display the option or not, as you like.
