    Greetings
Hopefully I have posted this problem in the right place.
Saturday during the day - everything fine. Leave house, power off computer.

Four hours later - return home. Boot up - no sound.
Check cables, power, etc. All good.
Put headphones on instead and - no sound.

    4 hours later....
    Restore to prior date
    Reboot
    No sound

Driver Detective - install drivers that needed to be updated.
    Reboot
    No sound

    This morning
    Reboot - no sound....

Any suggestions as to what has happened and how to remedy?
I had not installed anything on my computer.

    Compaq Presario 6027US
    Pentium 4 2GHz
    2 GB RAM
    Windows XP Home Edition SP2

As always any assistance is greatly appreciated

You have checked that the sound is not muted?

Try removing the Audio devices through Device Manager to allow Windows to redetect and reload the drivers. (Any flags against these items in Device Manager?)

    Thanks for the reply

Yes I have checked and muted in not on.

    No flags against these drivers.
So do you suggest I still remove the Audio devices through Device Manager to allow Windows to redetect and reload the drivers?

    It's the next logical step.

I went into Device Manager > Sound > and disabled Soundmax Integrated Digital Audio.
It removed it from the Device Manager.
    I rebooted.
The Soundmax Integrated Digital Audio is back - and still no sound.
The only other audio files listed in Device Manager were audio codecs, legacy audio drivers but I could disable or remove them.

Did I do what you suggested correctly?

By disabled I take it that you uninstalled/removed it as it no longer appeared in Device Manager.

    What you did was correct.

Basic question, but are the speakers well plugged in and powered up?

Yes the speakers are plugged in.

If I go to unplug them from the back of the computer I can hear the "pop" through the speakers. The light is on the volume control dial for the sound.

The speaker system is Creative Inspire 4.1 4000 - and I checked their website and they say that they do not have drivers or firmware available for this product.

I checked in Services and I do not see anything related to sound as being disabled.

    Suggestions

    And thanks for the assistance

    -------
I just ran the Creative Software Auto updater and it came back with the message:
was unable to detect any Creative products attached to your computer.

Check in the BIOS that the onboard sound is enabled - there may or may not be an entry for that. It is not unknown for the BIOS to make the odd change unprompted - rare, but does happen.

    makes no sense....

While waiting for a reply about which button to push during reboot I did a bios scan.
I then received the instruction on what key to use.
I turn off the computer and as it shuts down the shutdown sound comes on.

Computer starts up I push the F1 key but Bios does not open and computer continues startup - but it now has sound.

    Thanks for the help :D
