If you mean some drives say they are operating in msdos compatability mode, this means that their drivers, or the motherboard chipset controller drivers for the controller which handles them got damaged and are not loading so they are using the bios/ dos drivers. This severely restricts functionality.

In XPand me normally the first thing to try is to run a system restore. Start/ programs/ accessories/ system tools/ system restore/ restore my PC . Choose a date (a bold one, not a greyed out one) before the problem started. This will restore the drivers and system files to the ones used on that date.

If that does not work, often you can just use device manager (control panel/ system/ hardware / device manager) and locate the device and click remove and restart computer. When it is redetected often the correct driver will load from backup (Cab) files.

Otherwise, go download this free version of everest system analysis tool
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/everest.html
Run it and look under computer / summary (blue lines are links to get info and drivers ) and if that does not get you what you need go to devices / physical devices and
see what shows there where the problem device is.
Post back with information on motherboard and device which is giving you problems if you need help.

If you cannot boot to windows, can you get to safe mode or to a command prompt only boot?
If you have one, boot to a ME boot floppy and at the A:_> prompt type
    sys C:
    and hit enter
(get one at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm, either ME bootdisk will work)

When it confirms transfer, remove the floppy and do a ctrl+alt+del twice to reboot . Try booting to windows now.

    If still no go,

    Follow those instructions
