I have word xp and am trying to open a .docx file from a friend. Gives the typical "this is a pre release version of the comp. pack and can open pre release Office 2007 files only. do you want to check for a newer version of the comp. pack? "
Checking yes does nothing. Going to MS's site and attempting the fix they recommend doesn't do anything. Is there a way to open .docx in word 2002? A way to actually fix the file converter pack? thanks

I have updated office and dl the compatability pack. Still won't open a .docx in an email attachment. And now it won't open even a .doc. What am I missing here? The box is unchecked in oe under tools/security so that attachments are allowed.

I assume that you double-click the attachment but it can't be opened, right?

What happens if you right-click the attachment and choose download? Does it download? Can it be opened locally?

Hi JAK, I had a similar problem the other week and when I tried to open the attachment in the email, it said to Download the Compatibility Pack. I clicked on the link provided and Downloaded the pack from MS and hit Run and installed it and then clicked the attachment again and it opened, no problems. I have since had Auto updates of both Office 2003 and 2007 and everything is working OK. Neil.:D

I have the compatability pack onboard. The only thing I can do is save the attachment and then open word and look for it and open it that way. Not directly. Sometimes it won't find it this way and I have to use Google docs or something to find it at the saved location and open it.
When I open directly from oe,word opens and a window opens saying :Windows cannot find <filename> make sure you typed the name correctly and try again. "
