Are upload speeds on a cable broadband connection less
    than those for download ?
How do upload and download speeds on a cable broadband
connection compare to speeds with DSL ?
I have posted 3 e-mails to my I.S.P. This is the best that they can tell me:
"There are no standard speeds in reference to our High-Speed Internet Service. Our speed is measured by technology referred to as broadband, and transmits data at speeds up to 100 times faster than a standard 28.8 Kbps telephone modem.

    any ideas ??

schamish--Upload speeds on cable usually are much less (like 10-20%) than the download speeds. But it varies by cable company. Where I live cable comes in just one flavor (upload capped at 128 kbps, download capped somewhere around 1700kbps)). I believe in other parts of the country you can get more upload speed by paying more. Paying various fees is more common with DSL, but you usually have to pay a lot to get DSL speed comparable to cable. And then, of course, there is T1, etc.

Our cable company here doesn't provide any speed listing for it's broadband internet - only that it is 'up to x times faster than dialup'. I can understand why - when I had cable Internet I could get 2000+ Kbps dowload speeds at times but during peak hours my download speeds averaged around 300 Kbps - less than acceptable.

My DSL connection is 1000 Kbps and I get 950+ Kbps regardless of time of day or number of users. The phone company guarantees 850+Kbps or higher.

    Here DSL is 34.95 + 5 for modem lease = 39.95
    Cable is 29.95 + 10 for modem lease = 39.95

I have leased my DSL modem for over 2 years now and while I have paid more than it would cost to purchase one - it is guranteed against failure for as long as I lease it - to include power surges. $0.17 a day for the modem - not too bad.

I know that the DSL price in my area is a lot lower than the same speed service in other parts of the country - then again our phoen co is a co-op that we get a divident check from every year. Can't say I can complain about it...

Comparisons are odious - as someone once said !

Big problem is that, unless you pay big bucks, you're governed by contention ratios and this depends on who else in the area is online at the time !
