Compacting Folders causes them to be backed up

    Hi,

I was over at my friend's house helping him uninstall IE7 and return to IE6 because 7 was giving him all kinds of problems. It seems to be working fine now.

But, the problem he is having, is with Outlook Express. He has been having this problem even before, I think, he installed IE7.

When he goes to Compact his folders, he gets a window showing that each message is being copied at the same time. I think it is being copied to the Recyle Bin but I have never seen this happen before. Usually it just compacts the files and that is the end of it, it never copies them anywhere else.

Hopefully someone will be able to help us with this problem. Thank you.

    Hi,
I appreciate your prompt reply. I have read the sites that you sent me but I am not sure what we should do to rid ourselves of this annoying backup.

Should we try to delete the .dbx files? Will this help?

I'm just not sure what to do. Were you successful in stopping the backup of all the files?

I didn't lose any of my emails in OE so I just saved the .bak files in a folder in My Documents. I am waiting for the next time it tries to compact OE again to see what happens. The only reason I can figure the issue occurred was because I had a bunch of emails in the Sent folder which I have neglected to clean in some time. I usually don't store many emails within OE. The important ones I forward to a Gmail account setup just for saving them.

    Jean,

If the compacting goes wrong ... ;) ... you won't find the backups annoying but you will be appreciating them. The change came with the most recent update to Outlook Express (I don't remember the KB number) and was prompted by users having problems with compacting.

You know that backups are created and sent to the Recycle Bin. After having verified that compacting went well (no lost messages), empty the Recycle Bin. If a file got corrupted, restore it from the Recycle Bin, find it and rename it and you are back to the condition prior to compacting.

No, it will not help! If you do, you'll need the backups!!
