comp slows when copying cd

hey guys, i just stuffed up my windows system when i tried to dual boot windows and linux, just installed linux, and re-installed windows. I remember ages ago, i had a problem similar to this, and i fixed it somehow, through here, though i think that was before someone hacked into the site. Anyway, the problem is that, whenever the computer is doing something, say copying a cd to the hard drive, or its doing something in the background, the comp seems to slow, like the mouse behaviour goes erratic, not moving consistently, going from place to place in steps. If anyone could help me on this, that would be great, thanks.

edit: BTW my system is as follows:
AMD 1GHZ
256MB RAM
Geforce 2 MX
Ricoh CD-Writer/DVD-ROM
Yamaha CD-Writer
Creative Sound Blaster Live
Windows 2000/Linux

 

anyone at all know any info on whats happening to my system or how to fix it?

Sorry it took a while for you to get a reply....but to be honest, I don't know what to say. It's a normal behavior for it to slow down while it's under heavy usage, such as copying? Actually, when I do a burn...... I do nothing else. Both, so as not to interfere with it and because the system is slow when it's in progress.

before my system stuffed up, i didnt used to have this type of slow down though. It's not very heavy usage either, what i used to be able to do is copy files from a cd to the HDD, while winamp was playing, and winamp would be fine, no stutter. Now it stutters, which i think shouldnt be happening. It's a fresh install, no service packs on there yet. I'm thinking its because my HDD's are running in PIO mode, i tried to run it as DMA, but it wont go. I'm not sure if that's the problem. I'm guessing, to fix it, i would have to get a service pack, though i'll have to wait till next month to download SP3, us aussies have download caps and i've nearly reached mine for the month, bummer
