I have Win95 with Cable and Dial-Up Connection. IE is the Default Browser.

I am unable to open Netscape Communicator 4.75 :(
I get "This program has perfomed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor. "

    When I click on Details:.....
NETSCAPE caused an invalid page fault in module NETSCAPE.EXE at 016f:006054al.
Registers: shows some codes and so does Stack dump:

I have done a re-install of 4.75, and continue to get the same message. I then did a install/uninstall of Netscape6 thinking this would correct. I do daily and weekly maintenace with RegClean, Norton ScanDisk, Defrag, Empty Recycle Bin etc.

    Please help I'm

Hi RJ, and welcome to the Forum!

That's an error which can have multiple causes. We can start with a few basic steps:

    Back up your Users Folder
    Then...
    With Communicator closed:
Delete your Cache folder.. Netscape will rebuild the folder when reopened
Delete the netscape.hst file.. found in
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername
Delete the nsreg.dat file.. found in
C:\Windows OR rename it to nsreg.bak

    Open Communicator
The Profile Manager will prompt for a profile name. Give it the exact name of your old Profile and it should recognize it.

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

    Hi Ramona,

    Thank you for helping. :)

I have done all per your instructions and continue to get the same "illegal operation" message.

    Hi RJ,

Sorry those solutions didn't work! Usually creating a new Netscape Registry (nsreg.dat) will correct the error.

Let's try creating a new profile this time.

Follow the same instructions as above, deleting nsreg.dat, but instead of using the same profile name..... this time use a different profile name.

Then try opening Communicator. Let us know if you are successful, then we can transfer pertinent files from the "Old" profile to the "New" profile.

    Fingers crossed,

    Ramona

    Hi Ramona,

I created a new profile and still continue to get the same Error message. The splash screen starts and stops at Loading plugins. This is when I get the illegal operation message. I also noticed the News folder seems kinda big 1.66 MB should I delete? I also did a re-boot.

Maybe a plugin is causing the problem? You might try renaming your plugins folder (netscape\communicator\program\plugins) to "pluginsold" then trying to start netscape. It's possible there may be a plugin that isn't working with netscape for some reason.

    RJ,

That is definitely a very large clue, and tranquilo has given you excellent advice. Let us know if this allows Communicator to start.

You News folder is pretty hefty. Do you compact your Mail on shutdown? If not, Netscape will do that automatically.

    Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups|Mail Server|Edit|POP

Select "Clean up all folders on exit ".
