I am running on a Dell computer, system XP SP2 (that is SP Home Version) -- or so I am informed by Microsoft. I have two versions of Java, acquired by download, which the System tucked into directory
    program files/java
My problem is that when using the "Command Prompt" function, and trying to access that folder, I get a DIR listing of these two subdirectories (subfolders?):
    j2rel.4.2.03
    jrel.6.0.05
but when I try to access either of these subdirectories, the System returns a
    "no such address" message.
I have retried the DIR command numerous times, watching my spelling very carefully, and the same thing happens.
Is there some glitch, perhaps related to all the periods in the subdirectory names? Is there any way to get around this problem?
Alternatively, is there some other way I should try to acquire Java? I can smell the coffee perking, and I'd like to get some access!

What is the full path to the folders? Try adding the double quotes:

    Dir "C:\Program Files "

If it works on your PC, you could try this trick to get into funky named directories...

First, get into the immediate root directory of the directories you want to see and do the dir command or do dir /ad (lists all directories hidden, system, or otherwise).

If you can see the directory you want, type 'cd ' then type the first letter/character of the directory you want to get into then press the tab key. The name of each directory with that name (starting alphabetically) should pop up with each press of the tab key.
Alternately, you can just press the tab key after typing 'cd ' with no text after it and the name of every directory in that sub directory will pop up each time you hit the tab key.

When you finally find the right directory, you can just press enter.

If it doesn't work on your PC, there is a registry hack that will enable it...though I don't recall what it is but I could find it.
