I have been struggling to get a PCI serial dual port card to work on my Win2k machine, without any luck dammitall. Every time I uninstall it to reinstall it to uninstall it...etc...it thinks the com port numbers are still in use. It's taken 5 attempts so far and now they will only sit in com port 10 & 11. What gives? Why does it say that all the other port addresses are in use?

Because it's recorded in the registry every time you use another Com Port. Try a registry search.

Yeah...it's there, I just can't get it out. I see the settings and the wrong com port numbers in the value fields but can't delete or change the value. Any suggestions?

If you're logged in as Administrator then you should be able to delete the keys of the Com Ports you have used so far.

    Hmmmm...
Maybe I'm trying the wrong thing. I've been trying to delete the entries that are listed under the driver/manufacturer of the PCI card (ITE) [btw...never buy their junk]. Should I be attempting to change/delete a reg value that has to due with the system or com ports specifically, and not the manufacturer? Does it have something to do with the manufacturer's reg popping up in several places in the registry?
    Thanks again....

Search the registry for Com1, and place a check mark in, *Match whole string only*. You should see all the Com Ports listed in the right hand pane.

    Hello again...

Here's the deal, Com1 is ok, exists, and is working fine. But that's the only Com port I have that is working fine. The other two port, the ones on the PCI card, have been bumped back to COM10 and COM11 because the comp thinks all the earlier are in use due to previous inst/uninst of the card (regardless of the fact that the card really doesn't operate right even though it says no conflicts).

The card required drivers to be loaded from disk, and is manufactured by ITE. There is an 'ITEuninst.exe' in C:/WINNT/ folder for the drivers that doesn't seem to do anything upon execution.
??!!One of these days I'll get a computer to work :)

Then remove all references, above Com1, from your registry and try again.
