    Hello there,

When I first boot up (cold) my PC in the morning, I get to the "Win XP welcoming screen ", and then; it reboots to the "choice screen: where I can choose "Start Window in Normal mode" or "Start Window with the last good known settings" or "Start in Safe Mode" .......and so on.

If I choose "start window in normal mode" it will continuously (at least 5 times as far as I know) reboot to this screen.

If I choose "start window with the last good known settings "; sometime it works and starts window, some other time it just reboots back to this screen.

If I choose "safe mode ", I'll access "win restore" and use my last restore point. Only one time using this the PC rebooted back to the "choice screen ". Two other time it started window just fine.

AND, when window has started, I can "Restart" window as long as I want and I have no problem.

So, my problem is only when the PC is cold.

Any help is appreciated....And I won't shut it down until I get an answer!!!!

Sounds hardwareish to me so I'm moving this to the hardware forum.

Meanwhile I think your idea of not shutting down is a good one. Depending on exactly what is wrong, you might be able to hibernate which draws about as much power as being shut down but may allow a normal resume from hibernation.

I'd recommend getting your backups in shape.

Then try running Scandisk with the full surface scan. It's not certain but your HDD could be getting ready to go south.

my hard drive is brand new, Western Digital 40Gig 7200RPM.

That means nothing. I exchanged two of them before I got one that lasted more than three days.
