I am reasonably versed in computers and have been in them for many years. After hearing about "cloud" storage and thinking this may be a good thing to keep some files so that I can access them in both my computers, I started out looking for a program. After trying about seven of them, I gave up. I checked the free ones out and in all of them, the universal part of uploading your files is slow, incomplete or just doesn't work. These are document files, too, nothing special. Has any of the members found a free program for cloud storage that is simple and easy to use? All I want to to have some data files up there and to be able to be seen by my other computer (Microsoft has one, but refuses to let me edit the files unless I change to Word 2010). Would be interested in the member's opinion. I have tried icloud, Adrive, MS, Ubutu One, Wuala, Media Fire, etc., none of which made it easy to upload any files, much less have a second computer see them.

I'd be interested in what folks have to say about online storage, too. I recently tried Acronis (free version), found it most unsatisfactory. Only after a while I found out it won't save disk images of the OS. (Not that I need that, but Acronis's FAQS could be better.) It was also awfully slow and had difficulty with some simple text files (true, on only a 3Mbps asdl line) . I'll try Carbonite as soon as I get a chance. Meanwhile I'm thinking that the least expensive & convenient method is to just use an local external HD - ed

Some points to consider re. Online storage - my opinion only ....

Would you trust your data to a third party and trust them if they say it is encrypted?

Consider the possibility of the storage server being hacked giving an unscrupulous third party access to your data.

Consuder the possibility of the company failing - they go and so does your data.

I prefer to maintain all my backups on separate internal and external drives and at any one time have 3 copies of all important data.

To access files between my various computers they are all networked including my laptop and netbook.

All my important data is stored on a drive separate from the OS drive and when away from home that data is copied to an encrypted folder on either the laptop or netbook.
