I have Word 2002. When I close a document I get the message THE FILE NORMAL ALREADY EXISTS. DO YOU WANT TO REPLACE THE EXISTING FILE? Selecting Yes give me the message THE FILE IS READ ONLY. Selecting No gives me a Save As screen. Selecting Save gives the me original message THE FILE NORMAL ALREADY............ Selecting Cancel on this screen closed the Save As screen and I then have a blank grey screen. Using the X in the top right box to close gives me the message CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE THAT AFFECT THE GLOBAL TEMPLATE, NORMAL. DO YOU WANT TO SAVE CHANGES? Selecting Yes gives me the message THE FILE IS READ ONLY. Selecting No finally closes the program.

What is the problem I need to take so many steps?

    Thanks

A good starting point for troubleshooting Word problems is to search for and delete normal.dot (with Word closed) - the file will be recreated the next time you start Word.

If this fails to solve the problem I suggest you repair Word - in Word > Help > Detect and repair.
