I have just installed WinXP on a new computer. If I open Windows Explorer and click on a folder or any item in the left column Explorer closes. This is everytime. Any ideas? I have run "sfc /scannow" with no luck. Thanks.

This fix is intended for another problem but fixes folder file associations. It couldn't hurt to try:

Is this a brand new, clean installation? If it is, and you haven't installed any programs that could have made alterations to the registry, I'd suggest a repair installation. It would appear the original installation was faulty.

Thanks for the reply Abraxas. I tried the file you suggested with no luck and then did a repair install and STILL have the problem. Clicking on a folder in the left pane of Explorer causes the Explorer to close. This does not happen by clicking on a folder in My Computer or any other window. I will wait for further input from the forum and then I guess I have no choice but to do a clean install.

That is a strange one. Somehow shell32.dll keeps coming to mind.

What does the Event Viewer tell you? (You might find it useful to clear the log and then produce the error so that only the new entries will be present.)

Try toggling "Display Simple Folder View..." in Folder Options, just for the heck of it.

    Hi Bill, Lonny

Hold hard there !!! The option to repair IE 6 does not exist in XP !!! At least not through Add/Remove programs.

    See MS KB article 318378

Here are a couple of things for a repair

To repair Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows XP:
Note: Before proceeding, ensure that your Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM is available.

From the Start menu, choose Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow
    Choose the OK button.
Restart the computer when the System File Checker program finishes.

Alternate fix to repair Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows XP:

Note: Before proceeding, ensure that your Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM is available.

From the Start menu, select Search, and choose Files or Folders.
Select the More Advanced Options item and ensure that there is a checkmark beside the Search hidden files and folder option.
In the Name field, type ie.inf
In the Look in drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Choose the Search Now button. The correct ie.inf file should be located in the Windows\Inf folder.
Using the right-hand mouse button, select the ie.inf file and choose Install from the drop-down menu that appears.
Restart the computer when the computer finishes copying files.

Thanks everyone. None of the suggestions worked and I wound up reinstalling XP. I did a clean install. I did not want to do that as finding a fix is a lesson for the future. However, I am too busy to give it the time it deserves. Thanks again.
