    Hello,

A co-worker has a problem. Never fails that a problem would arise at 4:10 PM on a Friday, which also happens to be my last day with the company!!

Anyway, no matter what she clicks one (my documents, my computer, shortcuts to file folders that she has), they all open up the search screen (the one you get if you got Start>search).

When the screen opens up, the box that says "Look In" has the folder name she tried to open.

She is trying to complete a MASSIVE report for the president to email today and can't get anything to open.

Same thing happens when she tries to use the start menu to open the same folders!

She restarted the computer and the same thing happens!

    Hi raingirlIT,

Have you tried a System Restore to say, yesterday?

I checked but system restore wasn't activated, so there is no restore point.

    Maybe system file checker?

Instead of left clicking - right click.

If the Search option is the first on the context menu list and in bold, it means its the default action on the left click.

In the context menu clck on Open.

    Regards - Charles

Make sure that: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell, the value (Default) is set to none.

The following fix usually works on this well known malady:

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

FYI, This malady is most often caused by opening Explorer or My Computer and clicking on the Tools > Folder Options > File Types > selecting "Folder" and then clicking OK instead of Cancel. Even though you have only looked and made no changes, changes will nevertheless be made IF you have selected Folder or File Folder and IF you then click OK. To avoid this, always click "Cancel" when you don't intend to change things.

I tried a few things before I left, but couldn't figure it out. I'll let their on call guy fix it, which will probably take a few weeks.

I wasn't about to stay past 8 pm on my last day!! (as it is, I stayed until 7:45 just clearing stuff up!) I am just glad to be out of that job!!
