When I try to do this when you put the cd in the drive etc it asks me for my administrator password.

Is this the password I use to log on to Windows XP because it was saying it was incorrect.

this is the original Administrator Password you setup when you installed Windows XP.

If I remember correctly, there are 2 ways to "repair" XP. The first one leads you to a recovery screen which enables you to actually boot that partition and input commands.

The second one you actually click "enter" for a new installation of XP at the opening screen and it will then search for previous installed Windows installations. It should find the one already installed and you will have the chance to "repair" it by simply overwriting all the system/os files. I have used both repair kits, with the second one being more successful (as I did not know enough commmands to work in the first one) The second one, however, repaired the problem I was having.

    Repair Windows XP Home

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a way to repair Windows XP Home Edition if your computer manufacturer did not furnish a Windows XP CD.
IBM furnished us a Product Recovery CD but they advised that this can only be used to reinstall everything that was installed before shipping. This means that we would lose our data and any software that we installed.
We have an I386 folder that is supposed to include Windows files.

We previously had an IBM computer with Windows 98SE and the Product Recovery CD had a Custom Recovery feature where you could install the Windows system files only.

    Thanks for any info.

If you have (or think you have) some system files messed up,
    start~run~sfc /scannow

    Hi Newt,
    Thanks for the reply.
What is "Start~Run~sfc/scannow" and what is it supposed to do?
I ran it but nothing seemed to happen. I did not get any messages when I tried it so I don't know if it did anything.

    hi jslow

    sfc/scannow you have typed.....

leave a space after sfc...... sfc /scannow (should then work)

This will run a check on yr system files and if any problems will repair taking data from yr original CD........you will be asked to insert this at some stage.

    regards
    andro

    Hi andronomad,
    Thanks for the reply.
I did leave a space as you noted after sfc / and the computer seemed to be doing something but I never received any messages or outcome of running this.
We don't have a Windows XP Home CD. Our operating system was preloaded by IBM. We have the folder I386 which is supposed to have the Windows system files.
We also have a Product Recovery CD from IBM but this, they tell me, is supposed to be used only for formatting your hard drive and reinstalling everything that was installed at the factory.

i think he means go to the start menu, click on run, in the little box type in "sfc /scannow ".

The command works from the run line after you click the start button.

It also runs nicely from a CMD window and I prefer it from there since you can see more detail on exactly what is happening.

For folks who got the PC but no XP install CD, it is probably about the only good fix-it option short of using the recovery disk and losing lots of your stuff. Sfc should read & use files from the I386 folder (or wherever the PC maker put the compressed system file).
