I don't use IE (just installed IE 10) as my primary browser, but I do use it occasionally. With Firefox, clearing the last open tab leaves the Firefox window open, but that's not the case with IE. Is there any way to keep an IE window open when the last open tab is cleared by clicking on the X?

Should give you the option to clear all Windows or not. That should be default.

In Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab, do you have a check in the box that says Reuse windows for launching shortcuts etc.?

The box was checked. I unchecked it, but IE still closes when the X in the last tab is clicked. Just to be clear, I don't want to close the tab (and IE), I just want to clear it so that I have a blank page, the way it works with Firefox.

When you click the X, it will close IE. I don't know why you want to do what you want to do. Just leave the last page. Don't matter what the last page is, it is still using resources no matter what page it is on if it is open.

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. I'm used to starting Firefox with a blank page, and leaving it open with a blank page when I'm done with it for awhile, and I'd like IE to behave the same way.

BTW, do you have any idea why IE installs folders in both C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) in Win7?

I am not sure. Just a guess here as one of them could be for a 32 bit and the other 64 bit system.

Thanks, guys. I guess I don't really care whether it runs as 32 bit or 64 bit, as I don't use it that often. I know that it's built into the OS but, for me, it's one of those things that's better to have and not need than it is to need and not have.
