The "clear location bar" button seems to be missing in Netscape 8.1 from the preferences. Anyone know where it has gone to? Or how I can clear the clear location bar in 8.x?

    Welcome to the Forum, captainnemo!

    captainnemo,

There is no single setting for the Location Bar. You can set Netscape 8.1 to "Clear page history on browser exit ". This can be done in Tools | Options | Privacy | Page History, or by pressing the "Clear" button.

You can also delete the history.dat file on exit, which will also clear all browsing history, and Netscape will rebuild the file on restart. If you never wish any browsing history, you can also change the file attributes of the history.dat file to "Read only ".

I am aware of both of these, but they have no effect on the location bar whatsoever (browsing history and location bar URLs are stored seperately). This functionalty was there in v7. Is there a reason it was removed? I have tried the hacks to clear the location bar from previous versions but none worked that I could find. I would love a hack for this.

    captnemo,

I was off one setting! I should have said the "Search" settings, and not History. I know better!

    NetFAQ's

    The Privacy window appears.

    Clearing the history:

Page History = The Page History is a folder containing a list of every site visited during a certain time period.

Search History = The Search History contains a list of Web addresses you entered in the address or location bar.

To clear the page and search histories, click the Clear button for each.

Hi Ramona, thanks for helping me :)

I opend up the privacy window and cleared every section except for the passwords, and the location bar history is still there. If I go to the location bar and type a single letter it will auto complete with a list of every page that begins with this letter.

I believe that in Netscape the search history refers not to the location bar but the search bar next to it. So it clears the browser history and the search history, but not the "netsite" location bar history since that option has been left out of 8.1.

    I wonder if this is bug/oversight? :p

    captnemo,

You can no doubt tell that I don't use Netscape 8.1, but I just experimented, and you can delete the Location Bar entries manually. In the Location Bar, type http://, and this will bring up all the links, in the Location Bar. Cursor over the links you wish to delete so that they turn blue, don't click, just cursor over, and then press Shift+DEL.

The contents of my location bar are cleared from:Tools | Options | Privacy | Page History| press "Clear" button, as Ramona had said. I keep my Save History at 2 days, and everything is cleared from the location bar after that time. I had only one item, and the above method cleared it.
I don't know what is the difference from the NS7 way, if by clearing the Location Bar is meant to clear the dropdown in the URL bar.

    I'll give that a try.

For now I got it go away by copying my prefs folder, deleting it, and then copying back stuff I wanted (bookmarks etc). That seems to be the fix for just about anything, kind of like "reboot ".

Really since I got the graphics to work on Firefox now (see other thread) I think I'll ditch Netscape anyway. Firefox is prettier.

There are other Themes for NS8.1, but, I don't like so many things about the program that I using it only to be able to answer questions from other people.
I got, almost, kicked out of a newsgroup, for relentlessly criticizing the beast.
I don't know about your fix, but I have had a recurring problem with Firefox1.0.7, and I have been able to solve it, for a while, at least, by keeping all profile files, except for some backing up, and/or borrowing some files like prefs.js, localstore.ref and user.js. I don't know what triggers NS8.1, but my fix works for the location bar dropdown. At least for me.
    But, I never bet anything.

    Another Possibility

I have my netscape 8.1 browser set to delete all your tracks once I've closed it. The address bar still shows sites for me also, but it does delete the ones I've typed during my last session. The sites that still autocomplete I've noticed are only ones in my favorites. Try deleting the favorites of the sites you don't want to appear in the address bar autocomplete. That is what worked for me. The new netscape autocompletes all your favorite sites automatically. That's a convenient new feature I think actually.

It works for me the way I outlined in message#7.
