We re-use IPs when we switch out and replace computers for maintenence. I'm doing inventory and trying to track down all the right names that are still out on the network (so I can remove old, unused entries from AD).

When I use nslookup for the correct ip addresses, I'm getting back old names that I know are no longer in service. Which means there are names that I don't know are right or wrong.

What's the procedure to clean up these records to make sure only current ips and names are listed on the dns records? I want to say the process is called "reclaimation," but I must be googling it wrong...

The simplest solution is to use DHCP to assign the IP addresses and then make sure that DHCP and DNS are kept in step. This works very well on Windows servers since 2003. For example see this technet article
