    okay here are the details
I have a computer that has win98 on it. I installed 2000 as a clean install on another drive. However I did not want to do this. My goal was to upgrade the existing OS. Is there a way to now do this? When I try to do a new install of course it tells me I can't because it would cause problems. ANyone know what files I will have to manipulate or regstry entries I will have to edit so that it will allow me to upgrade win 98 to 2000?

    Thanks in advance,

Normally you just put the CD in while in Windows 98, and choose to install and upgrade.
Make sure that you have stopped or removed anti-virus software. AV software tend to currupt things during an upgrade.
Also upgrade any drivers that is not Win2k compliant.

I know that much. But since I put a clean install on the machine already it tells me that I can't upgrade the Win98 install to win 2k because it will cause problems.

    Thanks,

Is there any data you need on the drive where you did the fresh install of 2K?

I think the following should work but maybe you ought to wait for either confirmation or a "Newt - have you lost your mind?" response from someone else.

    . Boot to Win98
    . Delete the boot.ini file on C:
. Delete the Windows folder containing the 2000 load
. Install 2K as an upgrade to your existing 98 install. Ignore any warnings about problems.
. If you didn't need anything from the drive with 2K, format the thing.

    Thanks Newt,

I appreciate the help. Hopefully your advice works. If not no big deal really.
