one of my disks is getting pretty full. I've deleted unwanted programs, cleaned the registry, run spybot and adaware etc. ANyone know of any free/shareware tools for performing other clean up operations?

Also, any known issues with particular makes of hard drives and XP before I go out and spend my hard earned?

    Ron.

Too many programs promise a cleanup, but don't deliver.
The easiest way, is to reduce the IE cache to about 10 meg, and reduce the system restore usage to a few meg, instead of it's "max percentage" default setting.
Use XP's built in Disk Cleanup.

Also - if you have hibernation turned on you will have a fairly large file holding the information needed for the system to hibernate. Fine if you use the feature but useless and a waste of space if not.

Drives - all the major ones will work with XP. From my most recent experience (but over a year ago) I now avoid IBM drives. Used to pay a bit extra for them since they were so reliable but had 3 go bad fairly quickly in two PCs at home.

Hi Newt... Sorry for the interuption...
Could you please point me how to disable hibernation feature(s) / delete file(s). "Sleep" keyboard key was default active on my M$ keyboard when purchased. It's a feature I've never use or care for.

Start > Control Panel > Power Options, Hibernate tab. Disable, click OK. Shouldn't have to restart even, although the actual hibernation files will remain until after a restart.

Another addition, if you have broadband, get IE's cache down to 5-10 meg. It defaults to a huge number, uncalled for.
In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Settings button (in the "Temporary files" section).

Newt ... I concur totally on your IMB drives decision (and probably with the post-IBM --> Hitachi drives). Same experience - three trashed IBM drives at home. Aggravating even with full backups.
Trying the Maxtor ATA 133 drives now. So far so good!

    Good Luck

Thanks reboot per "Sleep" keyboard key active. Went to "Hibernate tab ", it was NOT enabled. There was a message stating if option used, it would take 512 MB of space. I then checked under "Advance Tab" finding phrase "When I press on the sleep button on my computer ", selected to "Stand by ". Other options are .... Do nothing, Ask me what to do, Shut down. I selected "Do nothing" to kill the KB key.... which is what I prefer. It would appear "Sleep Button" usage does/did not use any negligible file space??

Don't confuse "Sleep ", with "Hibernate ". Sleep is a hardware function, built into the mainboard. Hibernate is a Windows application. Sleep won't use any space.
