I'm about to install vista ultimate (64bit). I have 4x500GB drives in my system labled c, d, e and f. I have Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005 installed on the c drive and all my media on the other drives (D, E & F).

I'm looking to install Vista as a clean installation by booting from the DVD, however i have 3 key questions:

    1. Will a clean installation by booting from the DVD format the C Drive?
    2. Will the installation delete all the data from the other drives?
    3. Does Office 2003 Pro work with Vista?

Does anyone have any recommendations for how to install vista based on the above senario, ie keeping the data on the other 3 drives.

    Thanks

No. You'll be able to choose the drive/partition you want to install Vista to, and can choose to format or not.

    No, same answer as 1.

I assume it would. Haven't tried it though.

As long as you realize that dual booting XP & Vista will lead to XP deleting Vista's restore points.... To prevent this you'll need to 'hide' the Vista partition from XP. This is normally done by using a 3rd party partitioning program. Other users may have some more info on dual booting XP & Vista. I choose not to dual boot.

    Arie,

Many thanks for your responses, its much appreciated.

I have a few more questions, based on your response if thats ok:

    1. Is dual booting a supported practice?
    2. How would you transfer your e-mail from outlook in XP to Vista?
    3. Is there an installation step by step guide out there for vista?

Also just as an information, i dont think im going to keep XP, i plan on formatting my XP installation and starting again. As i understand it, its better to start from scratch.

Oh and i have 1 last question:

    4. Is there codec support for XP, ie XVID, DIVX, AC3 etc?

    Much appreciated.:D

    I think it is.

I just copy my PST file, and then import it on the new machine's Outlook (in Outlook: select File > Import and Export from the menu, then choose import from another program or file, next select Personal Folder File (.pst), select the file & off you go).

    Yes, better :)

    I can't answer that.
