Clean Install - Netscape 6

I have followed all the instructions for a "Clean" install of Netscape 6.2.3 and all has worked correctly except for my Address book which I can not get to work.
I was previosly using 6.2.2
Can anyone help?

Did you follow these directions for a "Clean Install "?

The Address Book seems to be one of the problem areas when Profiles are converted. You might also want to move up to Netscape 7.0 PR1, which is even more stable than 6.2.3.

Did you delete the existing Profile folder before installing 6.2.3, i.e.,
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\yourname\xxxxxxxx.slt ?

If you have a backup of your Profiles folder, have you tried copying the abook.mab file from your backup to the 6.2.3 Profile folder?

Thanks very much.
Yes I did follow those instruction and I did delete the profile and backup before deleting.
I then copied all the files as instructed however the address book is blank.
I did the whole process a number of times with out getting the address book.

I usually try to find a fix for all problems before suggesting a new install or upgrade. However... in this case I would highly recommend that you use Netscape 7.0 PR1, as it is superior to 6.2.3.

Why your Address Book is blank, remains an uncertainty, and this is not uncommon in Netscape 6.x.

If you prefer not upgrading, you can try this fix, and see if it works for you. I tried the fix using Netscape 7.0 PR1, and it worked beautifully:

Create a new Address Book in 6.2.3

Close Netscape

With Notepad, open your back up abook.mab file that has the good
addresses in it

The Notepad display will have approximately 25 lines of header
information ending with this or a similar line: @$${1{@. Then a blank line. The line after the blank line will start with <(1AF=45), or something similar.

Highlight and copy everything on that line (<(1AF=45)) and all the rest of the lines through the end of the file.

In Notepad, click on "File Open ", then browse to your xxxxxxxxx.slt directory, and double click on the new abook.mab file that you created.

Once that file is open, go to the end of the page (Ctrl+End) and press "Enter" one time to create a blank line. Then right click, and select "Paste ".

***EDIT:
Then, at the end of the file, press "Enter" one time to create another blank line. Include this entry at the end of the file: @$$}1}@ Save the file, then close Notepad.END EDIT

Restart Netscape

Open the new Address Book, and your backed up addresses should be there.

If all else fails, then I would recommend using a third party Address Book Manager. This is the recommended Manager: Dawn.

Thanks for your detailed reply, I gave it a go but did not have any success.
I think I will do as you first suggested and install version 7. Are there any instruction on doing this so I can import mail, bookmarks and address book from 6?

You can also follow my Netscape 6 "Clean" install instructions, as it would be the same for Netscape 7.0. Be certain to do the "Custom" install in order to select the components of your choice.

On your Address Book conversion failure. When you copied your addresses from your backup and pasted them into your abook-1.mab file, did you check to see that there were two entries like this:

@$${1{@

<(1AF=45)Starting your addresses

then this entry at the end of the file:

@$$}1}@

I failed on my first attempt at the manual copy/past, and when I compared the two files (the newly created Address Book, and the back up Address Book) I discovered that there was only one entry for @$${1{@ You definitely need the two for it to work. My apologies for leaving out that important bit of information!
