Twelve pc network. Half have static IP’s. The other half are being assigned IP’s by DHCP.

One of the DHCP pc’s is a 3 month old Dell Latitude running XP Pro.

PROBLEM: Every 30 to 45 "seconds" the pc looses it’s connection. It stays disconnected for 30 seconds and then reconnects. Over and Over…..

I gave it a static IP and it works like a charm and stays connected. PC has an internal nic and a nic in the docking station. Both do the same thing. Moved pc to another desk and connected it to a known good line with same bad results.

Unfortunately, I can’t afford to give up the static IP to this user. Any ideas?

Hi Steve this is a new one! How do you do it? Smile.

I have no idea what is causing it but I do have an idea where to start.

Boot to safe mode in device mgr remove the nic.

As you probably know tcp/ip cannot be uninstalled but it can be reinstalled and therefore fixing any errors.

    So this will do it.

    command prompt

    netsh int ip reset xptcp.txt

    then shutdown not restart

    boot back up

    retest.

Will check back later tonight, leaveing the office and out to dinner.

    Good luck

Steve - I agree with Mike's recommendation. Since the behavior follows the PC, it can hardly be the NIC. So most likely a TCP/IP stack that is buggy in an interesting way.

Since you don't see this with a static address, it sounds like something is sending an ipconfig /release command and the 30 seconds is either the time needed for the PC and the DHCP server to negotiate a renewal of the address or possibly something sending an ipconfig /renew.

Something you might want to check is the lease information on the PC. If it really is releasing it's address and getting another, you should see the lease period is always at the maximum length rather than decrementing as the lease period ages.

If this "fix" doesn't you are probably looking at hanging a sniffer on the line to see exactly what is going on. Or possibly just blasting the thing and doing a clean reinstall.

Any possibility you may have a critter in there? I don't recall any viri or spyware stuff that behaves like that but you could have found a new species.

How do I check/adjust the lease time on the pc? Or is that done at the router?

Lease time (for all DHCP assigned) is set at the DHCP server and will be a standard value.

Check it by running ipconfig /all from a command prompt on the laptop.

You should see entries at the bottom like
    Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 143.168.8.8
    Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Friday, June 20, 2003 3:19:39 PM
    Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, June 23, 2003 3:19:39 PM

The only part you are interested in is the Lease obtained line. The one above is mine and reflects the fact that I got to work a little early (3:30pm start time) and booted up.

    Mmmm

Wonder why, and even especially since it did it from another line?

I would keep my eye on this one!
