Hi. I switched to Chrome several months ago and it was fine up to this week. Now it's started some really weird behaviour, every single time I use it, and I'm forced to revert to IE8 to be able to write here. What happens is this: about a minute or so after opening it, the CPU use goes to 100% and stays there. The only way out is to use Task Manager to knock Chrome down. Looking at the running processes before I kill it, there are several - maybe as many as 10 - instances of Chrome there, but there's only the one under Running Applications (or whatever the tab is called: my system is in Italian, so I may not always have the right word). I've tried disabling the various Chrome extensions one by one, and finally in exasperation all of them, but that didn't help.

    Grateful for any advice.

Hi Doc and thanks for input. No, I haven't yet. I was going to wait and see first if this turned out to be a well-known problem and a bunch of people had a ready solution. But the query has been up for a while and yours is the only response, so I guess I'll try that next. But it may not be this evening (it's evening here), as I'm also fighting with a printer that won't play ball. I'll probably do it tomorrow morning (unless another solution is suggested), and I'll report back here for anyone else following this thread.
    Thanks again.

Some on hear may not like my response but chrome has a tendency to be hijacked very easily and you should maybe look for browser hijackers.

I haven't used Chrome for a long time and don't like their privacy policies!

Chrome is just spyware for google it is a good browser don't get me wrong and nearly every site is advertising a download of it with other software like Avast and others if you don't uncheck the box, very annoying!

I use Opera with privacy extensions installed, delete new cookies on exit and set to do not track, can't remember the last time I got a tracking cookie!

The problem is that it doesn't matter if you set Chrome to a default search engine it will always let something override it's setting IMHO and depending what browser hijacker you get you could be redirected to malicious websites.

Mostly it's just ones that track your purchases, web history what your interested in and the data gets sold for to marketing companies.

I would personally go to the 'Virus/Malware' section, read the instructions and run the scans!

    Regards, Ian.

Well, I hear what you're saying, Ian, but I'm getting too long in the tooth to keep learning yet another browser... (I thought "Senior Member" referred to experience until I realised it refers to age!) I've been very satisfied with Chrome until this stuff started. I've now done a complete MSE scan overnight and - although the scan didn't find anything to report - Chrome seems to be behaving this morning up to now (fingers crossed). If it starts playing up again I'll try reinstalling and report back here. There are 9 instances of Chrome.exe under Processes, but CPU activity is looking pretty normal...

Sometimes Chrome will try to update when it's launched and sometime the connection to the update server times out or is slow, which will cause multiple retries by Chrome to update, forcing high CPU usage.

Arie: true, but I've disactivated all the plugins.

    Tony: "Sometimes" OK, but every.single.time??

Ian: You may well be right, but I'm giving up the struggle. Even uninstalling and reinstalling didn't solve it, and I've just got to get on with a lot of stuff I've put aside for two whole days now playing with this fail. I quite liked Chrome, but I'm not so in love with it that I'm going to lose any more time over this. Back to IE8 and I'll keep an eye on this thread, plus any other threads that address the same problem.

Thanks to all for input: I hope this thread might be useful to other Chrome users.

Hi sorry to hear your still having problems!

My own experience with Chrome was sick of getting Searchqu, Babylon, Yieldmanager, Crossrider and alike hijacking my default set to do not change search engine!

IMO Google makes revenue from advertising so as long as it gets a kickback from someone it's not going to be bothered who, Call me paranoid if you like.

If you remember the older Chrome with speed dial, Opera is almost identical.

If there's a site I visit a lot then I type in for eg windows bbs hit enter and choose it from Google then when the page is up copy the URL.

Next open the speed dial with just a plus sign on it, copy the URL and press OK, then each time I wish to visit this site all I do is click on the speed dial just like the older version of Chrome and it takes me straight to it!

There is a new extension for Google Chrome now called 'do not track plus' similar to the one I use in Opera called 'ghostery', which they probably won't like as it stops companies tracking your browsing habits!

You should have at least MBAM and Super Anti Spyware on your computer Yes?

But Adwcleaner is good, Ccleaner is good I personally use Advanced System Care, it's malware scan remove browser hijackers that some miss including your AV software. It's free although I have the pro version, 3 PC license for less than £10!

Anyone on hear that knows me knows I like Opera, so I am admittedly biased.

Aren't they cheeky calling us senior members because of our age, young wippa snappers!

    Have fun Ian.

Thanks, Ian - some very helpful stuff there. I'll work my way through it and check out your recommendations.
Meanwhile back to the coalface and some down-to-the-metal work that can't wait, like trying to make POST recognise a slave drive, and stupid stuff like that.
    Happy November!

Thanks, do you remember the first hard drives and the rom bios formatter from Western Digital that you had to invoke through debug G=C800:5 the hex location of the rom program to do the sub level format?

Now those days were hard and SCSI drives at the time even more hard work!

I like plug and play and AHCI in the BIOS, Smart auto detect is brill! Things have got so much easier over the years and you have these guys to help when things don't work as they should.

    Have fun, Ian.
