My 128Gb SSD that contains only programs is 75% full so I am thinking about changing it out with a 240 or 256Gb SSD. I now have a Samsung Pro 840. My question is this... I have decided on another Samsung Pro or an Intel 530. Both seem highly regarded (reviewed). From a functionality or "ease of swap out" perspective, should I have a preference? My demands are not severe and I currently have no sluggishness (except before my morning cupajoe... but I digress!). :D

    Thanks for any insights!

How about the changeover? Does either matter at all if I have a Samsung Pro now??

Thanks for the comparison chart. Quite telling.

No, not really. Clone old to new and you should be good to go.

    You're welcome. :)

Thanks, Dr.!! I will wait for the bigger brother of my current SSD to go on sale.

Well, I waited a little longer and just picked up the Samsung for $139.99!

I will use the EaseUs program to install it. Thanks!!

Well, I tried it and I couldn't get past square one which is getting the computer to just recognize the new SSD. I shut her down, plugged in a new SATA3 cable, connected it to an existing free power plug and nada. I did some cable switching and all connections were good on other devices. So... DOA.

Is there something I did wrong or does this just happen sometimes?

OK, I got the replacement SSD and I have an issue. Please help.

When I hook the new SSD up with a new 6Gb SATA wire that goes to the mobo SATA area (the 5th of 6 receptacles), and to an existing appropriate power connector that is part of a mixed use cord that also goes to the CD drive, the new SSD is not recognized in My Computer.

I ran the Samsung Magician software and to my surprise, it recognizes it!!
It is also in Device Manager!!

I can't clone to it if I can't find it!! Something about two SSD's on one computer?

    Thanks,

    Larry

Found a thread on another site and I needed to format it as New Simple Volume via Disk Management.

When I went to perform the clone I got this screen (see attachment?). Drive L: is the new 256Gb one. I am probably readying this incorrectly, but it appears to indicate that much of the 256Gb is not even available and that I will have less free space than I do on my existing 128Gb drive. Right? Thanks,

    Larry

Delete all partitions on the new drive L:, create a new one that uses the whole drive, format that partition, then re-try the clone.

(You would think the clone should be able to ignore [overwrite] whatever is on the drive without making you go through this hassle).

When the cloning is done, if necessary, you can expand the partition to fill the entire drive.

Re-partitioned. Now the Clone attempt... It still looks exactly the same as the image. Maybe it is not significant.

So... the cloning software says that it will erase everything from the original SSD in the process of cloning the new one. Is that right?? What will happen when I reboot? I assume that I should disconnect the old primary drive before I reboot and it will find the new one automatically? Will it reassign it as C:\?

    Sorry, really new at this.

I read that one can use Win7 Backup, too....

"Probably one of the best methods is right under your Nose.
Simply go to windows back-up (in control; Panel) and make a back-up image of your OS drive (SSD). Use the HDD to store the image.
When the image is done you will be prompted to create a Recovery/repair Disk, Up to you as I just use a regulare Windows installation disk.
Power off, disconnect Old SSD, connect new SSD.
Inset the Repair disk created above, or a Windows 7 installation disk - Select Repair, Restore from Image. 15 Min later reboot to new SSD. "

So, I went ahead and made the image Backup and the System Recovery Disc.

    Your thoughts?

Of course a problem. It does not consider the new SSD as acceptable. I found that I had accidentally marked it as Active when I formatted it, so I reset it as inactive and re-formatted it. Windows still doesn't considered it a candidate for installing the contents of the ISO file.

How do I fix this? Thanks again!
