There are 45 of these, with 42 in italics.

Ordinarily, I don't care to install most optional updates - especially for items like the Bing bar, and the Bing desktop - but I was just wondering what the consensus is among experienced Windows users.

Do you folks usually read the More Information articles associated with each optional update, or is it best to install the optional updates (barring the Bing stuff) anyway?

For what's worth, I have all versions of .net framework installed, except for version 4.5.1.

I never install optional updates, especially drivers. If I need drivers I get them from the manufacturer.

I don't like Bing so never install their stuff.

In fact, I hardly ever install other updates either! Only definitions updates for Windows Defender and Flash updates for IE 10.

    I wait for service packs...

Normally, the only optional updates I install are those for MS Security Essentials. You can choose to hide those you don't want, such as Bing, so that they're never displayed.

I've never heard of that before.

    Sounds risky for home users.

I don't recommend that to folks here or my clients.
But for myself, I don't get infections because I know enough about search engine result links, browsers, operating systems and how to fix 'em if ever necessary. I always do manual updating and only install those that are absolutely necessary, which means very, very few updates.
