Have just switched to Windows XP Pro from Win 2k. I find that I need to run a check disk but am unable to find where to do so from. Any help would be most appreciative.

Go to All Programs - Accessories.

If you go to your Start Menu/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools you will see the options where you can check your drives and defragment them.

In My Computer or windows explorer, right click on the drive you want to check and choose properties and then the tools tab. Click the "check now" button under error-checking. If you want it to fix any errors it finds tick the box labeled automatically fix file system errors. The other one is the equivalent of the surface scan you could do in win9X with scandisk. It can take a long time to run that one so you probably won't want to do that one unless you won't be using your puter for a while. ;) With either of them you may be prompted to reboot.

You can see if it fixed anything by checking your event viewer. Start>run and type eventvwr.msc. Or, if you have administrative tools in your start menu you'll find it in there. I could be wrong but I think you'll find it in the applications section. Under the source column, look for winlogon.

First login as Administrator or Windows is not going to permit chkdsk.

    Ray ...

You can also run the Check Disk utility from a Command Prompt window ...
    Start > Run, type cmd.

    Maximize the window for convenience.

Type chkdsk c: (or another drive, if you have more than one) /f to fix errors on the drive. If running Chkdsk on C:, it will be run after you restart your computer.
(Note that there is a space between chkdsk and /)
Typing chkdsk /? will list all of Chkdsk's options

    Thanks

I was trying to figure out how to check my HD since a menu popped up telling me a program would not run to defrag my HD until I ran chkdsk. Thanks for the information.
