Again my 13 year old son tells me I know nothing. !!!
Is there such a thing as a "chip set" driver ?
Would Windows 98 (with the update installed) installed this driver. Or do I have to hunt for the driver and install it ?

There are indeed drivers for the motherboard "chipsets ". Usually they're available from the chipset manufacturer such as Intel or VIA. What one needs to know is the manufacturer and model of the motherboard to determine what chipset is in use. A computer make and model number would allow determing the "mobo" that's in the machine.

In any case, unless there's a good reason to reinstall them "” a hard-drive format, improper operation traced to the chipset dfrivers, or newer drivers offering a significant advantage over existing ones "” there's little reason to redo them.

A generic Windows 98 installation would not install drivers specific to a given chipset. A recovery disk for a computer most likely would, if the original motherboard in in use.

    DrDoom,

thanks for your rapid reply. If I did indeed reformat should I
reinstall the chipset driver ? Would it of been picked up in a normal Win 98 (original Win 98 followed by Microsft update) ?
I am a beginner. How can I physically spot adn identify the
chipset? I know just take off the cover and look but icomputer hardware is new to me and "they all look the same ".

    thanks again,
    Stephen
