Caption shown that Windows installed requires validation, probably caused by reinstalling computer to factory settings. I may been taken in! but right or wrong followed instructions and contacted Microsoft on line, then phoned number shown on screen. Microsoft, gave me a lengthily number to enter, then showing Windows 7 was now activated. I am now made to believe that you can check if Windows 7 is activated by entering a code into computer. Is this indeed correct and if so what is the correct procedure. Referring back to Microsoft, can they actually check my computer prior to giving me the number code to activate Windows 7 installed? Information will be most appreciated. Thanks, Bobby.

Use Internet Explorer to go to this Microsoft Validation Status page. When the test is complete, you should see a:

    Welcome to Windows!

Because Windows installed on your PC is geniune, enjoy the security and reliability and protection it provides.

Hi BobbyScot, I just check Start > Control Panel > System > last entry at bottom of page will tell whether you are activated.

Doing the Auto Activate procedure usually involves keying in the 54 Ident numbers using the keypad of your phone.
Then you will get a similar set of numbers which you enter on your comp.
I've been through this procedure quite a few times and just a couple of days ago for my brother's comp.

He purchased a Product Key from a trader on Trademe (NZ's Ebay) and was provided with the Download link for the OS.
I did the job from there. I Downloaded the W7 Pro SP1 in ISO and burned to Disc.
I installed to a brand new HDD and activated with MS. I installed all the necessary Software and Programs he wanted and the comp worked for 3 Months - then he got the message that he needed to activate within 2 days!!!

I have spoken with MS and I can't figure out how MS actually activated the OS if it was a "pirate key" and why it should run for 3 months without problems. The old story-buyer beware!!!

He now has to fork out for a NEW legitimate key which MS say they no longer can supply. (MS guy suggested Newegg).

Sorry for the long Post but I thought it might be of interest and warning. Neil.

Thank you for both threads, most appreciated. Checking Start>CP>System & Security>System>See name of computer>at bottom of screen shows that Windows is activated. My sincere thanks for this valuable information, noted, Bobby.

retirelearner> Can you please advise me, as to where the Ident number can be found? At first thought it was the 25 numbers shown on the update disk to Windows 7.HP Presario pre-installed Viesta Home Premium was later updated to Windows 7 on a special offer from HP.

Download, install and run Nirsoft's ProduKey. It will show you both your 20-character Windows Product ID and 25-character Windows Product Key.

If you get a pop-up notification from one or more of your anti-malware program(s), simply add the C:\Program Files (x86)\NirSoft folder to their exclusion list(s). (ProduKey is totally safe).

I downloaded/Installed Nirsoft's Produkey. Nothing happens after clicking an icon in Start (after clicking icon it just disappears). Any suggestions, please, Bobby.

Click the Start orb, type in msconfig and press Enter. Click the Boot tab, select Safe Boot, click OK, then click on Restart in the following dialog box.

When you're done running Produkey, repeat the above but remove the checkmark from the box next to Safe Boot.

Thank you for information. I disengaged my Malware software and tried again to install ProduKey, this proved to be successful. However on Malware engaged again, ProduKey fails to function. I note key codes are as given on Windows 7 box stick on label and not numbers required to enter phone pad.

Correct. The Product ID and Product Key codes are the ones you need. That other one will vary dependent on the computer, date, time and who knows what else.

If you mean MalwareBytes, as I mentioned above add add the C:\Program Files (x86)\NirSoft folder to MalwareBytes' exclusion list and you won't need to disengage/re-engage MalwareBytes in order to run ProduKey.

SpywareDr. thanks for suggestion, will enter in MalawareBytes. It only leaves how to obtain the numbers required to activate Microsoft validation.

I tried to enter C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\NirSoft in MalawareBytes under

    Exclusion list.

    Malaware Exclusion:
    Add File. Add Folder. Remove.

    Web Exclusions.
Add IP Add Domain. Add Process. Remove.

None of the exclusions would accept C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\NirSoft.

Hi BobbyScot, Sorry i was busy on another problem with my brother's comp.

The Ident numbers will be displayed when you try to Activate by the Automated phone process. Nine groups of 6 digits are displayed with a parallel set of blank groups below.
You are asked to key in the first 6 numbers using your phone keypad. Then each consecutive set of 6 will be requested.
When the last set of 6 is keyed in, there will be a period while they are checked. If they are in order you will be asked to key in a fresh set of 9 groups in the blank areas on your computer with the comp keyboard.
That will then be the Activation complete. Neil.

    You're welcome.

Microsoft will not share that algorithm. As I stated above, that unique, one-time code is automatically generated by Windows and is not stored anywhere.
