My bosses home computer (WIN XP Home).

While booting up an error message pops up saying Check File Consistency. If he bipasses that it boots up and works (I believe his choices are OK and CANCEL) otherwise it goes through some long process that takes several minutes before starting Windows.

Any ideas what is causing this and how to fix it?

    It's a Sony Vaio.

start~run~sfc /scannow and have the XP CD in the drive since it will probably be needed.

If the CD lacks the SP he runs, reapply the SP after the job is done. And that particular hassle is the reason making a slip-streamed CD /w OS and most recent SP is worth the effort.
