I am using Windows XP Pro, but why I just couldn't tick my check box in my "Disk Cleanup" option, it just highlighted the descriotion, when I tick on it, and the check box couldn't be tick? Thank You.

Hi singse - Welcome to the Board :)

    Try this approach ....

To start Disk Cleanup, click Start, click Run, and then type cleanmgr.

Exactly that was what I have done. I went to START -> ALL PROGRAMS -> ACCESSORIES -> SYSTEM TOOLS -> DISK CLEANUP, then select drive C, and click OK After all, the dialog box of Disk Cleanup has shown that how much space of the files (eg. temporary internet files, off line web pages, office setuo files, recycle bin etc)have been used, so what I usually do was tick on the check box at the left side of the description, which I want to clean, then click OK. But very unfortunate that the box couldn't be tick. Thank You!

Also try this. Go to start>run and type (or copy/paste this) cleanmgr /sageset:1, hit enter. Can you tick and untick now? Check all except compress old files. OK out. Again, start>run and type cleanmgr /sagerun:1, hit enter.

Dave - curious about why to avoid the 'compress old files' piece. From The Elder Geek
Granted, it does not remove any material but it does unclutter the drive some. And note that the XP defrag routine does the same thing without your having an option to not compress.

All the XP systems I've worked with take just this side of forever to run the cleanup piece the first couple of times and worse if you allow compression. But after you start doing it regularly, the whole process is pretty quick. For instance, I just did my system drive before sending this reply. Only a 15Gb partition with 6Gb used but the analysis took 10 seconds and the cleanup took 32 seconds and I did allow compression of old files.

Hmm - Mike Flynn in his Classic Clean Up Good specifically stated to omit 'Compress old files'. Never questioned it, but ....

Yep, Newt & PeteC, Mike Flynn said not to compress old files, so I don't, either. Newt, your logic makes sense, though.

Probably a good thing Mike didn't tell us to stand on our heads and whistle "Dixie" during clean up, as well! LOL :D

I partly skip it due to Mikes recommendation and partly because often times a system will hang on compression. I seem to remember one recently in 2000 forum you posted on. Can't remember if it was you or someone else, that recommended skipping compression. Also, as noted, it gets done when defragged anyway.

Hi guys, I have always left compress old files unchecked, but on this machine, they end up getting compressed whether I like it or not.

Off Topic: Hey Dave, what is the alarm clock for? You trying to wake us up, or remind us that the Grim Reaper is coming someday?
