Just installed an Adaptec chassis fan and I gotta tell ya it is noisy. Puts out 27dba at 2900 rpm and 39dba at 5000 rpm. Fan is an 80mm inside an m7viq system board running with an athlon 1800 processor. Only reason I put the fan inside this case is because my understanding is that Athlons tend to run hot so thought this would help.

If someone tells me this chip doesnt run hot then I will remove the fan.

Anyone have any recommendations on what is the best chassis fans out there ???????

My case fans are noisy as well. Depends largely on money input as to how quiet fans are, as the noise is nearly always generated by the action of the fan blades cutting throught the air and can be lessened by decreasing the spin speed as well as the design (angle) and composition of the blades.

Check your BIOS if it gives a readout of CPU temperature. Reboot the system after it has been used intensively for an hour or two and check the temp.

Download Everest home which will give you all this info and a lot more from within windows.

Monitor information displays at boot giving temps of all types. Will do with the fan in and with fan out to see how much difference there is. Maybe machine doesnt need the fan.

Do you like this other util better than sandra ???

I haven't used Sandra for a few years so can't comment.

Carefull if you remove these fans that your HD(S) and graphics card etc don't run too hot.

Providing the ambient room temp is not too warm, then on most systems the CPU should be OK with a suitable fan and heatsink combo that is free of dust buildup. Where you usually need extra cooling is in warmer climates, where the system is overclocked or you're an avid gamer or running intensive applications for long periods. The only reason I installed an extra fan other than the two that came with the case was that SATA drives run a lot hotter than IDE drives. I put an extra 80mm fan in front of the SATA drive blowing air across it, towards the back of the case.

The side fan and top blower (exhaust) fan don't do all that much except make a racket! :( They do lower the case temp a few degrees though.

Also, what hardware you have in the case/box (Paul mentioned harddrives). I recently upgraded the video card on my machine and would suppose that the whole system's temperature has increased at least 10*C (note to myself, extra fan required  ) The heat from all the added hardware should be added into the equation.

If I want quick, easy information on my system I go to Everest (actually the old Aida32). If I want more detail or the added features (eg. benchmarks and you can use burn-ins if it is still in warranty) I go to Sandra.

Run both Everest and Sandra if you are not pressed for space. "Remove" one if it's not what you want.

Folks thanks for all your input.

Am assuming that no matter what chassis fan there is they all make quite a bit of noise.

Not necessarily. The more expensive ones can be fairly quiet. But I would be carefull about forking out a lot of dosh and assuming that the fan will be quiet.

Kinda what I thought. Have done a bit of research on them and its hard to believe the reviews on the products. Heck I thought adaptec would be quiet but I was wrong there. But better to be a little noisy than to fry something because of over heating.

    Thanks all.
