I don't know if I can properly explain this or not but here goes. I have a Samsung notebook running Windows 7 starter.

It has the mouse "pad" instead of the red eraser like on my previous Thinkpads.

Originally I thought it was some bug in this operating system but apparntly this is built into Windows 7 and it's very annoying.

If I tap the cursor pad twice really fast, it's the same as double clicking the left mouse key.

This causes all sorts of weird things to happen if your not used to it which I am not. I personally hate it.

What is this function called and how can you turn it off so the mouse functions like with previous windows versions? Thanks.

Have a look in the control panel at the mouse applet. Mine has a tab at the top for the settings for touchpad. If it's there, have a look in there. Somewhere in there, there should be a setting do disable it. If it's a Synaptics pad, it will be in there under the tapping section.

I know what you mean though. I can't stand the tapping thing myself. Disabling it is one of the very first things I do on a new laptop.

I figured it was in the mouse settings but it's not. That was why I couldn't find it at first but I got to digging around and on my computer it's called Elan mult-finger, AKA Smart-Pad in the control panel.

I went through and unselected as many options as possible to kill it. Also I turned the palm sensitivity up to the max. So far it seems to be doing better but it still does weird things from time to time.

Whoever came up with this thing must have been the same guy who came up with that IDrive control knob on BMWs about 10 years ago. What a turd!

Laptop touchpads have always been this way. In most all laptops, the touchpad can be disabled completely, the buttons will still work.
