XP Pro 40 GB HD 512 MB Mem. Cable conn. to internet.

For reasons totally unknown to me, when I boot up, the security settings in
Internet Options under the Privacy tab are reset to prompt for First party cookies and b.lock third party cookies. The check mark is cleared for Override Automatic Cookie Handling and also from Always allow session cookies which is not the way I wish it to be set. I want to allow first party cookies, prompt third party cookiesd and the check marks sert in both boxes.

I use a program called Cookie Pal from,ww.kburra.com to contriol cookies for me and that setting that I cdesire is the only way Cookie Pal will work.

I hope this is clear and that someone has a solution to keep the privacy settings as I set them.

    A thing to try:
    - dump TIF and cookies
    - defrag the drive
    - start~run~cmd followed by chkdsk /f and let it run at next boot then boot.
    - set cookie options like you want them
    - start~run~sfc /scannow

    rickyD2--
I do not use Cookie Pal, so do not know its requirements. Are you saying that your settings in Privacy tab affect its operation? What happens if you set the slider on the first Privacy window to Medium High and uncheck both options in the Advanced window?

    Privacy settings

Welsh Jim - No the privacy settings are unaffected, insofar as I can tell, by Cookie Pal.

Newt, I'll give your plan a try and keep you posted. Thanks to all.

Another option would be to use Regmon from sysinternals to sit on the zone regkey to watch for what process is changing it.

Since you mention it only happens when you boot, you might try clearing CPBRWTCH.EXE or any other non-microsoft stuff from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for testing purposes.

Newt - I ran the options you mentioned, now I cannot get "msconfig" to come on and stay on. When I ise start-run-msconfig and click OK the window opens but remains about 2 seconds then dissappears. I have never had this happen beore I ran sfc /scannow as you suggested. How can I get this corrected?

SFC (system file checker) should only have replaced any damaged or missing system files. Certainly shouldn't have broken anything. Shouldn't have.

Take a look in your event logs for events (errors or warnings mostly) that seem related to the msconfig problem or just happened at about the same time.

Unfortunately I did a system restore but that didn't resolve the problem.

I do not know how to access event logs.

    start~run~eventvwr.msc

AS is usual with XP, there are half dozen ways to get to the thing but I like simple and this one is simple.

There will probably be lots of stuff in the logs so maybe a good idea to empty them, reboot (so you will see any boot errors), try msconfig again, and then look at the logs.

Newt - I did as you suggested, cleaning out both application and event logs.
Re-booted and then tried msconfig and regedit nweither of which would remain as open windows. Event logs show NO errors nor anyutbhing relating to these two run commands. The run command itself seems OK since I was able to use the command you gave me. What next?

As an update to Newt - the problems in this thread were apparently linked to a funky hard drive which failed completely on May 29 at bootup.

New HD now installed and the problems no longer exist.

Thanks for the update. Sorry the drive went bad but glad you figured out the source of this very puzzling problem.
