    MBPS

Short for megabits per second, a measure of data transfer speed (a megabit is equal to one million bits). Networks, for example, are generally measured in Mbps.

And a little more I took from Here
And if folks are careful to write their units correctly - Mbps abbreviates megabits per second while MBps abbreviates megabytes per second and properly, shouldn't be used for network speed measures. Your NIC for instance will be rated for Mbps.

Since a byte = 8 bits, it makes quite a bit of difference. Since a network speed of 1 MBps = 1,000,000 rather than 1,024,000 (or 1.000.000, 1.024.000 for our UK/Euro members), it could easily get real confusing. :)

I hadn't been having the connection icon runing but just started mine. Display is in packets. Did a "?" help on "packets" and it did tell me the data would be in bytes or packets. But no way I could see to change it.

May be a function of what NIC or something. No idea. But if you also have packets and want bytes, you can fire up task manager, networking tab, and add the data you want to the bottom section there. More informative than the connection icon by far.

Lots of options for bytes (sent, rec'd, etc.) along with unicast and multicast packets.
