I thought I would try to come into the current century and maybe switch my internet service provider from the one I signed up for in 1992 (wow, the Internet was available way back then . . . ?).

As I begin to shop around, I got to wondering, if I allow my current provider service to lapse, will I still have access to my current email address or will I need to change? I guess I've heard differing opinions on this. It seems unreasonable for my provider to maintain my account, since those inbound/outbound message (or maybe just the inbound ones) reside on the provider's server, until I access them, right? Alternately, it almost seems like more trouble to close that email account, than to just leave it, on the hopes that the customer might return one day.

Clearly, I don't want to continue to pay for two providers, and one just to maintain my existing email address. What's the definitive word on that?

If you change ISP's your email address will change from, for example .....

CDobyns@currentISP.com/net to CDobyns@newISP.com/net unless, I guess you use a web based mail service such as Hotmail in which case Yourname@hotmail.com would not change, just the ISP through which you accessed it.

If you close your existing account the ISP will remove you from their servers, unless you maintain an account of sorts with them. Example .....

My original ISP on dialup and later on Broadband was Btopenworld - a year ago I changed ISP's for Broadband, but maintained the Btopenworld connection on a Pay-as-you-go basis simply to retain the free web space for one of the websites I master. I have to log on via dialup every 60 days to keep them happy and the web space safe.

When changing ISP's and thus email addresses it is simple enough to inform those in your Address book of the change. Create an entry Undisclosed Recipient which is your (new) email address and send a change of email address to Undisclosed Recipient with bcc to those in your Address Book.

Web sites & businesses - banks, credit cards, memberships, etc you will have to update manually on their web sites.

    To add to PeteC's suggestions:

Most isp email has a feature called Forwarding. So, if change isps, retain the existing isp for 2 months or so and configure that email to forward all messages to your new address w/ new isp. This can usually be done via the isp's online account setup page. However, the caveat is that all spam will get forwarded to the new address too.
