On my desktop the icons will change by themselves. For example all folders will change to real player icons or all kazaa icons or some other icons. I can change them back to defaults when I restart but does anyone know why they are changing in the first place. I have scaned for viruses and worms etc. so far I can't figure it out. Its one of those annoying things.
    Thanks for any help.

Try deleting a file call Shelliconcache from your system.
A new, ungarbled file will be created at the next boot,

pvjr--If you cannot find "shelliconcache ", it may be a good time for you to learn about TweakUI. You get it free from MS here
    http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
Once installed, open TweakUI, click on Repair tab, choose Rebuild Icons, click Enter.
P.S. If you could not find Shelliconcache, it is because it may be a hidden file. You can un-hide it by clicking Start|Settings|Folder Options|View tab|check box "Show all Files "|Apply|OK. You can then do what merlin suggested, but using TweakUI does a few other things, and, in my opinion, you will find it a helpful program to have and use as necessary.
Here is a tutorial on TweakUI

Just a short comment. There are pros and cons to TweakUI - I think MS abandoned it , but you can still find it - see Jim's links.
I personally find it useful now and again,
but it is no match for some more modern tweakers.
If you use it to Repair Icons, the icons for all files and folders will revert to their system defaults (eg yellow boxes for all folders)
If, for Folders, you have customised the folder icons using desktop.ini files in your folders, they will not function after using TWeakUI.
Deleting the Shelliconcache file however, leaves your customised folder icons intact, and cleans the icon settingswhich usually get garbled if your system crashes .
    regards
